Na/GloPoWriMo 2026 Day 12

alchemy in grandma’s kitchen

when the early morning sun streamed
through savory steam, wafting from a
bubbling stockpot in my grandma’s kitchen,
it usually meant someone was sick.
chicken on the bone, celery, carrots,
onions, garlic simmering all day
was a proven cure for seasonal ick.

“Give her my special cough syrup”
grandpa would holler from his well-worn
chair near the front room window,
Bonanza flashing in black, white,
and gray from the tv box…Hoss was
always my favorite, though everyone
said Little Joe was the best
.

After supper, grandma would open
the special cabinet, where a dark glass bottle on the top shelf was hidden, grandpa’s stash, as she eyed me, whispering
cautiously, “only because you’re sick…”

She’d measure a jigger of sweet,
whiskey into hot lemon juice with honey…
like magic it soothed my sore throat and helped me sleep, along with cool
camphorated oil rubbed on my chest, a sock
filled with salt warmed on the coal-fired stove wrapped around my neck, and cotton balls, dipped in garlic oil, stuffed
in my ears…I was a loopy, smelly sight, but
by morning, miraculously, I was healed.

At 5 years old I believed my grandma
was magical, wise, some would say, a witch.
Looking back, I am convinced that she was!

Na/GloPoWriMo 2026 Day 12 Prompt: Today, we’d like to challenge you to write your own poem that recounts a memory of a beloved relative, and something they did that echoes through your thoughts today.

And a glimmer of course…

An intriguing find deep inside my burning bush plant. Made me smile. Kind of reminds me of a turtle… am I wrong?!

Anyhoo…nature imitating…nature. It’s a wonder!

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

Na/GloPoWriMo 2026 ~ Day 5

Well, for today’s prompt challenge I started with this…

don’t you just hate it…

I can say without a second thought
I have never hated anything
your assumption sounds like lecturing
I thought you knew me; well I guess not

but let’s go there since it seems you forgot
it’s not in my nature to be such a thing
I can say without a second thought
I have never hated anything

I’m love, light and peace, hateful I’m not,
spare me your know-it-all blustering
I ha-, dislike it greatly, you think
I could hate, well that hurts me a lot
I can say without a second thought
I have never hated anything

…but I have to come clean…there is one pesky thing, or who rather, that irks my ire!!!

living rent-free in the gray

my insular cortex cannot insulate me
from that intrusive voice, those vile lies, you know who
before long my putamen disrupts my deep sleep
turns my prefrontal cortex gray matter to goo

to hate is not me, just don’t mention DJT
what’s a peace, freedom-loving, old hippy to do
my insular cortex cannot insulate me
from that intrusive voice, those vile lies, you know who

I have loved, loved, and loved ‘til I’m blue can’t you see
I am done playing nice, i am nobody’s fool
this regime’s got to go or democracy’s doomed
the cruel things he has done to us all makes me scream
my insular cortex cannot insulate me from that intrusive voice, those vile lies, you know who 😡

and then there’s this…I am having way too much fun with today’s challenge… does that make me a bad person? Don’t answer that! 🤪😳🤣

inedible weed

I abhor it, you know
loathe it, disdain it
find it totally disgusting
abominable, utterly repulsive
it makes me sick
ruins a perfectly good dish
makes it utterly distasteful
you know exactly that weed
I am talking about…
CILANTRO
but to say I hate it?
hate is not a strong enough
four-letter expletive
to describe something
as nauseatingly repugnant
as this so-called delicious green
that leaves a lingering foul taste behind
pass the guac, hold the…
I can’t even say it without
throwing up a little in my mouth

Na/GloWriPoMo 2026 Day 5 Prompt:  write a poem in which you talk about disliking something – particularly something utterly innocuous, like clover. Be over the top! Be a bit silly and overdramatic.

Todays poetry form: the Rondel

  • A Rondel Poem consists of 13 -14 lines in 3 stanzas
  • Rhyme scheme: ABba/abAB/abbaA-B (uppercase letters are refrains)
  • Usually 8 syllables per line

Today’s Glimmer…Realizing that even when life is coming up dandelions, it is a wonderful, very good thing. The roses will flaunt their ruddy faces soon enough.

Much love, peace, glimmers, and dandelion wishes to you!

waking the giant

waking the giant

I don’t want to alarm you…
or maybe I do…yes, definitely I do,
while you were sleeping
the world took a turn,
a rather nasty one at that
and you thought voting red…always red
would lower the price of eggs and gasoline
it’s true, those things are astonishingly
affordable these days,
I’ll concede, I have you to thank
for that…perhaps
but it’s a smokescreen, a wizardly curtain,
a sleight of hand, if you will…
a calculated plan to divert your attention…
I take no pleasure in being the bearer of reality
painful as it is to have to break your happy, sleepy, little bubble
but it must be said,
you can’t bury your head
refusing to watch the world burn,
the one your little eggs and gas vote
set on fire,
you did that
(Though I’m sure your mother told you
not to play with matches or magas…whatever, semantics…)
because fire, when it is out of control
eventually destroys everything…and everyone
you should know,
I could never forgive myself if I let you sleep
through the end of all endings
so yes
consider yourself alarmed
hate me, if you must
for saying what needed saying
and if by some miracle you want to know more
I’m here,
where I’ve always been,
keeping watch,
with my expandable, 50-foot, copper-laced for extra durability, pocket hose,
the $29.95 special deal as seen on tv,
(I discovered it while watching the news…)
and strong coffee,
because i know this is a lot, truly I do,
but it’s time to wake up…
WAKE UP NOW!!!
if you’d like to talk…
it’s never too late to do the right thing

~kat

This splash of green caught my eye from yards away, our driveway completely clear and dry from the ice and snow that held us captive for nearly two weeks. It’s my glimmer today. The sun is shining. The sky is blue. And this little sprig of pine reminded me that spring is coming soon. A few more warm days like this and the hardwood trees will start looking nubbly with leaf buds readying to pop when the time is right. It’s been a cold dark winter. I’m ready to welcome in the light!

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you! ✨💚✨

day 316

What is your favorite place to go in your city?

What is your favorite place to go in your city?

I don’t do cities
unless I’m forced to,
if I must do
things like appointments,
grocery shopping, you know
“lifing” like a zombie, day in
day out…I don’t do cities
unless I’m forced to,
i prefer a natural scene,
the rolling Blue Ridge Foothills
you’ll find me here most
nights and days,
working hours, and play
where traffic is a gaggle
of gobblers crossing the
driveway, where the sound
of wind rushing through
the trees sounds like ocean
waves crashing into the shore
where my top 40 hit list
is birdsong…
from hummingbird
chirps to pileated
woodpecker cackles,
crow caw-caws and
raven grunks
I traded bumper to bumper
morning commutes
with morning walks through
the mist at dawn
this is my favorite place
i don’t do cities anymore
unless I’m forced to
best decision I ever made
no looking back

~kat

I discovered this magic portal on my walk this morning. Isn’t it fabulous? I wonder who has taken shelter here. Chipmunks, squirrels, perhaps even some faerie folk! At any rate. This is a proper glimmer if there ever was one.

Much love, light, and glimmers to you!

Idiomiotic

Idiomiotic
(yes it’s a made up word…😜…do not try this at home!)

well, it’s always something, except when it’s not
for your two cent’s worth, I’ll give you a penny
what a deal, it’s a steal, a real bargain that’s hot,
hook, line and sinker, want more? I’ve got plenty
yes, I could go on and on, with this row,
spinning these idioms, ad hoc, ad nauseum
I’ll toss some cliches in the mix you might know,
or not, I can flip flop, flop flip with the best of them
but it’s getting late and it’s been a long week
it’s time to wind down, calm things down for the night
count my blessings, count sheep, pray my soul to keep
it’s a nightmare just waiting to happen, sleep tight
no witching hour wake up haunts at 3 a.m.
adrift on soft clouds, undisturbed R.E.M.
cause it’s always something, except when it’s not
tired, exhausted, this poem’s not my best
if there was a prompt for today, I forgot
you can thank me later, I’ll give it a rest!

~kat

Coined a few, perhaps a few too many, idioms for today’s NaPoWriMo 2018 Day 13 Prompt: write a poem in which the words or meaning of a familiar phrase get up-ended.
