day 62 – a time to bake bread

This past weekend’s project…a few loaves of bread. My favorite parts of the process? Watching the yeast activate in warm, sugar-sweetened water…and kneading soft, warm dough…it’s not something you rush through. Good bread takes time and effort, but it is so worth it. When I’m in need of a glimmer…when I feel stressed or overwhelmed, I bake!

you say i’m overreacting …

Obviously, over half of us are losers.
Victory was never in the cards for us.
Everyone knows the truth now.
Remember when
Republicans were respectable?
End of an era…it’s the end of all endings.
America is on the brink.
Can you see it? Why can’t you see it?
Tell me when things are great again.
It’s not going to happen, not for us
Only for the rich…and the soulless
Not that it matters…lies comfort you more than the truth

A little back story on today’s poem. I had a disturbing conversation with someone close to me recently. Someone who voted for Trump. I know several people who lean that way. They think what’s happening is great…it’s about time someone shakes things up. It’s obvious they get their news from this administration’s reliable unreliable sources and the sycophants who spin and regurgitate the lies that keep half of this country afraid and angry. It’s that…or they just don’t watch the news.  Once, every four years, they come out in their red, white, and blue attire on Election Day…cast a vote for the person who entertained them the most. And then go back to living their happy little lives while the rest of us burn in the hell’s wrath that they’ve unleashed with a flippant stroke of a pen. There’s really no talking to them. All I can hope for…and it makes me feel like a horrible person for thinking it, is that when the pain and suffering comes knocking at their door…as it will (I don’t know any billionaires), that they get a belly full of what they voted for, thinking it would only affect other people. It’s a horrible way to think, but sometimes people need to hit bottom before they can begin to heal.

There are a few things I can commit to when that day comes. I’m not heartless…I’m a bleeding heart liberal who wants peace, justice, fairness, and freedom for everyone, for goodness’ sake! But I am bracing myself, and intent on finding redemption for thinking what I’ve thought. To that end, I won’t say, I refuse to say, “I told you so.” But I will be there for them, to console their profound disillusionment, to lift them from the shame they might feel for having been duped by a vile con artist. I will love them, even as I do now, even though we believe very differently about how the world should work. It’s the very least I can do. I promise to keep a light shining. To be a safe place. I’ve been preparing my whole life for this. Compassion and empathy are often forged in the fire of hardship and adversity. Yep I can do this. I am here for such a time as this.

Peace, love, and glimmers of light to you.

Today’s Poetry Form: The Acrostic

An acrostic is a poem or other word composition in which the first letter (or syllable, or word) of each new line (or paragraph, or other recurring feature in the text) spells out a word, message or the alphabet.

“stop and smell the roses”

stop trying to please
and take some time for you to
smell spring’s sweetness in
the moments after the rain
roses misted, dressed in red

NaPoWriMo2022 -Day 6 Prompt: write a variation of an acrostic poem. But rather than spelling out a word with the first letters of each line, I’d like you to write a poem that reproduces a phrase with the first words of each line.

To challenge myself even more, this poem was created using Original Magnetic Poetry online in the format of a Tanka 😊

Quid Pro Quo – NaPoWriMo/GloPoWriMo Challenge Day 23

Quid Pro Quo

Quibbling aside, it is plain to see
Unless you’ve been living underneath a rock
In dealings with our friends and enemies
Donny T’s crime family is in hock

Promises of aid held for a favor…
Rouse investigations, tell the world
Or forfeit our assistance, overheard

Quid no pro, pro no quid, it’s hard to tell
Unwittingly or not, goods were exchanged
Our nation took a blow to its good name

~kat

For NaPoWriMo/GloPoWriMo Challenge Day 23: write a poem about a particular letter of the alphabet, or perhaps, the letters that form a short word.

Pink Flamingos – NaPoWriMo/GloPoWriMo 2020 Early-Bird Challenge

Pink Flamingos

Perfection in pink
Ignoble, some might say,
Notorious, nonsensical,
Kitsch, in full, on crude display

Flamingos,
Long-legged, lovely loons
Aping graceful water nymphs
Molded plastic paragons
Immortal relics, sans of vim
No other curio competes
Gnomes defer their plotted place
Outdone, no crass landscape’s complete
So gird your lawns, flamingo pink!

~kat

For NaPoWriMo/GloPoWriMo 2020 Early-Bird challenge, “write about your favorite bird”. I couldn’t resist! I love plastic pink flamingos! The more, the better. I once thought about displaying a yard full with a sign that read, pink flamingo sanctuary! 🤣 The best part is that there’s still time for me to make that dream come true! This poem is an acrostic poem, where the first letter of each word spells the title…Pink Flamingos.

Warning Label – NaPoWriMo 2018 Day 25

An Acrostic Poem for today’s NaPoWriMo 2018 Day 25 Prompt: write a poem that takes the form of a warning label . . . for yourself! I have been accused of talking too much. Or of changing the subject mid-sentence, by those who know me best. I don’t think I’ve ever been as awful as today’s poem suggests, but I had a bit of fun poking fun at myself. Apologies to anyone I may have infuriated by not allowing you to get a word in edgewise…I’m working on my listening skills. 🙂

Welcome! Come in. I’ve heard such nice things about you…Tea?
All my friends call me…well…you can call me Kat.
Really, I insist. And I won’t take no for an answer.
Now tell me about you. I want to know everything.
Im not big on formalities as you can see. I like things simple,
Not that I don’t like nice things. But I have been told that I’m low maintenance.
Give me a reason not to like you; that’s what I say. I get along with everyone.

Love comes easy for me, too easy.
And hate…well I just don’t. Unless, of course…never mind…I don’t.
But, this is about you. So tell me… You were saying?
Except, if I might…just one more thing…I should warn you
Little things…like details, lies, and small talk…they make me crazy. Did you say you wanted tea? Sorry, I’ll brew a pot. So where were we? Oh, I might have forgotten to tell you I have an appointment soon, so our visit will need to be shorter than we planned. I hope you don’t mind. We should plan to do this again soon. I think we’re going to be great friends. I can tell. And I have a feeling about these things. You have my number don’t you? I’ll call you.
