Through the Breach of Tar and Pebbles

‘He made the world to be a grassy road

Before her wandering feet.’ -W.B. Yeats

Through the Breach of Tar and Pebbles

iron spires wrapped in nettles
splintery oak and knobby pine
iron spires wrapped in nettles

facades eroding, lost to time
penetrating every crevice
splintery oak and knobby pine

tendrils snaking ‘round a trellis
ghosted spaces, gently greening
penetrating every crevice

vibrant once again and teeming
blooms emerge and bumbles fly
ghosted spaces, gently greening

traces of human touch, disguised
Gaia’s voice calls forth the living
blooms emerge and bumbles fly

bursting forth from clay forgiving
iron spires wrapped in nettles
Gaia’s voice calls forth the living
iron spires wrapped in nettles

A Terzanelle for Jane Dougherty’s A Month With Yeats -Day Twelve Poetry Challenge inspired by the verse above from Yeats’ poem, ‘The Rose of the World’.

It’s Just a Weed

it’s just a weed
you know it’s true
it’s just a weed

with blooms of blue
the first to rise
you know it’s true

feast for our eyes
a sign of spring
the first to rise

though winter clings
with one more frost
a sign of spring

seems all but lost
it will not die
with one more frost

it will survive
it’s just a weed
it will not die
it’s just a weed

Fragile…a Terzanelle

how fragile life is
a hiccup in time
how fragile life is
touched by the divine
miraculously
a hiccup in time
yet vast as the sea
a breath, a soft sigh
miraculously
though all things must die
to be born again
a breath, a soft sigh
beginning to end
interconnected
to be born again
sweetly perfected
how fragile life is
interconnected
how fragile life is

Yellow Rose of Autumn

she always blooms in autumn time
golden bursts of fading summer
she always blooms in autumn time

shorter days and frost become her
fragile petals clinging softly
golden bursts of fading summer

sparking memories held fondly
days of innocence and sweetness
fragile petals clinging softly

cycling seasons meant to teach us
letting go is not the ending
days of innocence and sweetness

‘midst the thorns she thrives ascending
though the winter looms in waiting
letting go is not the ending

rooted deep, her heart pulsating
though the winter looms in waiting
she always blooms in autumn time
she always blooms in autumn time

Toward the Light

how she presses toward the light
though her feet are rooted deep
how she presses toward the light
past the edge while others sleep
walls cannot contain her here
though her feet are rooted deep
tossed by tempests, numb with fear
resisting every urge to hide
walls cannot contain her here
now she sees the other side
breaks free from the shuttered throng
resisting every urge to hide
proving the naysayers wrong
darkness thwarted in the end
breaks free from the shuttered throng
even roots must stretch and bend
how she presses toward the light
darkness thwarted in the end
how she presses toward the light
