mother to mother
I can’t begin to understand
the everyday of life for you
I can’t begin to understand
I want to help, what should I do?
my privilege blinds me to your plight
the everyday of life for you
the fear that you must feel each night,
each time your children go outside
my privilege blinds me to your plight
your suffering, the tears you’ve cried
enough’s enough, the time has come
each time your children go outside
that all our kids are safe, not some
I hope you know I stand with you
enough’s enough, the time has come
for me to listen to your truth
I can’t begin to understand
I hope you know I stand with you
I can’t begin to understand

I liked this very much. As a black mothr, I had to tell my sons, especially, how to stay safe if stopped by the police. When I told my students, one of the white males thought that I needed to rethink those lessons, but I explained to him and the class that I couldn’t stop if I wanted to ensure my sons came home at the end of the day. It’s not a discussion all mothers have to give. I appreciate the compassion and empathy in this poem.

It is a conversation no other should have to have Regina. My heart breaks for you and all mothers of black sons. It is time for this to change. ❤️

Has Twittering Tales stopped? I was teaching and missed some weeks and then couldn’t find it.

I had stopped it for a season. We moved, downsizing a great deal. I took a break from writing as well during this time. I am now just coming back. I do plan to restart it. But it will likely be on a weekend when I have time to devote to it. Peace to you.
