day 165

becoming

said stone to the river,
“how soft you feel as
you wash over me…
but after a long season
in the deep, I am forever
changed…my soul revealed.”

~kat

The weather forecast is calling for a week of rain, and flood warnings. There is a spot in my yard where grass refuses to grow. On hot, dry days it is a slope of powdery red clay; a favorite spot frequented by turkey hens who take in a dust bath and lounge in the sun. On rainy days it becomes a mudslide with the rain water transporting the top layers down to the grassy areas. It’s a slow erosion. Over the years more and more red clay is exposed with trenches where the water has streamed through.

Our lawn guy has asked us if we want him to try planting the area. But he knows us and our love of the wildlife we share this space with. Because the turkey hens love it so much, he knows we’re good to let nature landscape our yard. And the clover? Let’s not clear that either. The bunnies and deer love it too much.

Like rocks eroded over the years into smooth pebbles by rushing river streams, this place has softened and changed us too. Well manicured lawns are for urban spaces…but here in the foothills, I am content to let moss collect in the shade. Let the rain change the landscape on the hill. It feels like home.

much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

Magnetic Poetry – Nature Kit

day 161

a magnetic poem ~ The Poet’s Kit

my heart remembers
it like it was
before the lies
before we were broken
from the ocean’s rhythmic dance
to the delicious slow kiss of
a cool breeze’s embrace
there is joy and peace

~kat

Today’s glimmer is a day late…I was a bit overwhelmed with reentry into work after a daunting two and half day travel schedule.

After trying for hours to muster the words while fighting sleep, I gave in and picked up this morning with a little help from the online magnets. I did manage to enjoy last evening breeze as the sun set. There is much I could say about the tidal turn of our country and the chaos that is happening., but I encourage you to remember what life was like before uncertainty and fear took hold.

If you are fortunate to live by the ocean, get yourself to the shore and let the sound of waves lull you to calmness and peace…that’s your glimmer!

If you, like me, far from the water’s edge, I invite you to go outside and give yourself to be ravaged by the breeze. It needn’t be a brisk breeze…just the slightest whisper will do. That’s your glimmer.

Tomorrow we march, tomorrow we advocate, but for today may the natural world hold and keep you, and help you remember who you are and how it was not too long ago…

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

A Noctuidae Sighting on Bramlett Mountain ~kat 2025
new moth

sheltered from the rain
a moth perched under the eaves
‘twas a moist owlet!

~kat 😄

I discovered a new bug this evening. A moth actually. I was able to snap a photo so I could look it up. This particular moth comes on a variety of colors and I realized I have seen these before in brown. But this was the first black one I’ve seen.

It is a Noctuidae, its name of the type genus Noctua, which is the Latin name for little owl or commonly referred to as owlet. It also goes by the names, armyworm or cutworm because the larvae of this group can form destructive swarms that cut through the stems of plants.

Given my recent poem featuring the word “moist” I could not resist having a little fun with words. Not only did I learn about a new bug but I found the perfect opportunity to use this cringeworthy word again!  Win-win. So now you know the rest of the story! haha

Much love, peace and moist glimmers to you! ~kat✨✨✨💚💚💚✨✨✨

day 122

beneath the white oak tree

to live in harmony
with nature, let the wind
breathe life into your soul
feel its purity deeply and
rest in the ancient knowing
that you are one
with everything you see

~kat

It was a beautiful spring morning here in my little spot on the planet. The trees have filled out and green in various shades has blossomed into a beautiful canopy. While it is lovely to take it all in, it’s good to be reminded that we are not just spectators but a part of all we see in the natural world. When I consider this fact it makes perfect sense to tread lightly on the planet, to conserve its resources and to take care of the earth just as she takes care of us.

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

Oh…and this guy? He’s my old cousin Tom, several times removed, of course! But family nonetheless…can you see the resemblance?! 🤣

glimmer day 108 ~ NaGloPoWriMo 19 April 2025

true or false

what if it was impossible to tell a lie?
would we say less to each other?
would we avoid the hard conversations?
or would we finally become real…
able to look into the eyes of that face
in the mirror with acceptance, embracing
all that we are, all that we hope to be?
what if we weren’t afraid to say
what we feel, what we need,
what we think, what we know is true
imagine the freedom of fully trusting in
absolutes, in right and wrong, in light
and dark, day and night, imagine how
the world might be if the history we tell
ourselves and our children actually
happened, the good and the bad,
no judgement, but used to apply lessons
learned to make the future brighter,
a gift to our children and their children…
once upon a time when someone told
the first untruth we lost our way
because lies grow like a cancer
until the truth is impossible to know
how different would life be if we could start over
refuse the lie that some lies are okay
commit to what is real and right and true
I can only imagine it… can you?

today’s glimmer

love’s tree

if love were a tree
she’d be two trees intertwined
from root to blue sky
