day 60

peanut wars

an attempted murder, two crows in a tree
waiting for peanuts, provided by me
‘til a party of jays
came to spoil their buffet
it’s a murder now, two crows are three

I love my crows. There are two regulars that visit me in the morning. They call for me if I’m not outside. It’s peanuts they crave. I have a station set up for them far from the feeders that I reserve for the smaller birds…the finches, wrens, phoebes, starlings, cardinals, nuthatches, juncos, and tits. The crows used to intimidate my smaller guests so it seemed like a good compromise. And for a time the crows loved this arrangement and were happy to leave my community feeders alone. That is until the Blue Jays discovered the peanut station. Now mornings consist of alternating dive bombs to the tray. My faithful duo of crows call for backup. Just one more makes them a formidable murder…sometimes there are more. The jays are obnoxious and fast, but the crows are fierce. Eventually the jays disburse and the crows enjoy their morning treat.

There is an obnoxious party of jays looking to take what is not theirs from the crows. But there is a fine tipping point when a pair of crows becomes a formidable opposition. We need to remember we are not alone…we have each other and when we band together those seeking to overtake us cannot win. Today’s glimmer…find the others and stand together.

Peace, love, and glimmers to you. You’re not alone…together we win.

Occasionally we have an uncommon visitor to the feeders. This is a beautiful Red-Bellied Woodpecker.

day 26

a turkey with a great personality

a great gaggle of gobblers passed by
magnificent fowl, but I’m not gonna lie
I’ve heard they’re quite snuggly
it’s a shame they’re so ugly
a feast for beasts of prey, not for the eyes

When humor is a glimmer.

They say that humor is the best medicine. The limerick fits that bill perfectly I’d say…though I’m quite a novice at this form. My inspiration came from a gaggle of turkeys who happened by my window. A huge flock of them! They are magnificent birds, with delightful personalities and amusing banter. I always know when they are close by, announced by their cheerful gobble, gobble, gobble. And when they all take flight, they are a sight to behold with wide powerful wingspans.

But here’s the thing…

From behind their full plumage is beautiful, impressive. Then they lift their heads and look your way!!! Oh my! Poor creatures, they are quite homely. The face only a true turkey aficionado could love…and yep, that would be me. I love our resident turkey clan! 😊 Isn’t nature  amazing!

Peace, Love, and Chuckling Glimmers to You!

Uncle Ned (A Limerick)

Uncle Ned

Old Uncle Ned, a likable fellow was he
An affable charmer, the cousins agreed
He made the kids laugh
For his jokes were quite daft
Made us wonder what was in his tea!

NaPoWriMo2023 Challenge Day Fifteen: think of a person – real or imagined – who has been held out to you as an example of how to be of live, but who you have always had doubts about. Write a poem that exaggerates the supposedly admirable qualities of the person in a way that exposes your doubts.

there once was a shyster named Don
a scammer in chief, a vile con
to court he was dragged
by a porn star he shagged
how climactic, his just denouement!

A limerick today…straight from the headlines! You can’t make this stuff up! I shouldn’t be enjoying this, but I am. I can’t look away. Not sure I captured the theme…but the past few years have been over the top inappropriate. Hoping this brings a little levity to this absurd train wreck!

NaPoWriMo 2023 Challenge Day 5: write a poem in which laughter comes at what might otherwise seem an inappropriate moment – or one that the poem invites the reader to think of as inappropriate.

A Cheesy Limerick

Not sure what Limburger cheese thinks about how its odiferous essence affects diners, but I have heard that if you can get past the smell, the cheese itself is delightfully nutty and sweet! Adding “Try Limburger cheese at least once before I die…even if it kills me!” to my bucket list. heehee!

A Cheesy Limerick

From the Duchy of Limburg, now Liège
hails a much controversial cheese
though it smells like foul feet
it tastes nutty and sweet
slap a slice between rye if you please!
