day 180

soulless

how damaged must a person be
to spew pure hate with vicious glee
to hoard life’s treasures from the least
they lust for power…what kind of beast
denies humanity to them,
the poor, the weak, while they pretend
to care about the common folk
dismantling the words once wrote
by people seeking liberty
from kings demanding loyalty
clearly they have sold their souls,
to an emperor who has no clothes
the people see now what they’ve done
but it’s too late, the deed is done
when democracy dies, evil has won

~kat

It’s hard to wrap my brain around what is happening. The country I love is dying. There may be a few attempts at life support, but democracy is no longer valued. A government for the people and by the people where every person is valued and promised human rights and the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. We have become us and them, the haves that want more, and the have-nots who stand to lose everything to feed the beast.

Today is a very dark day in our country.

We celebrate Independence Day this weekend. The irony is stunning.

I am clinging to my commitment to search for glimmers each day. I started this at the beginning of the year precisely because I knew there would be moments like this. A dear friend sent me this mug. It arrived late yesterday and is my glimmer to share with you too. I am going to make some tea in it now. Join me in spirit or even with a cup of your own.

What holds me together is the realization that good still exists in this world. We may be silenced for a season to suffer the cruelty of our leaders, but we are here! There is light to be found in the eyes of those of us who remember compassion, love, and kindness.

Much love, peace, hope and glimmers to you!

And one more thing…the turkeys stopped by. Mama hen and chick too! That baby is growing taller, her feathers are filling in and she is a riot, running circles around the hens! Did my heart good to see them thriving. ✨💚✨

day 140

what goes bump in the night
(a cleave poem)

part 1

the air is heavy
just before the storm
raindrops ride the wind
dusk drifts into night
the darkness provides cover
as a fearsome interloper
steals bits of food
from the least among us
the wrens, the phoebes, the finches
destruction in its wake
the feeder stands mangled
seed tubes ravaged
what good are a few seeds to
massive beasts when
to the birds they are everything

part 2

they assembled
in hallowed halls
the murmur of opposition surges
as they spin their evil plans
the big beautiful lie, while
an unconscionable act Is executed
enriching the wealthy
over the stunned masses
the poor, the old, the sick
survival of the richest
as democracy dies
sacrificed for greed
these gluttonous monsters
hoarding more than they need
leaving the people to perish

part 3

the air is heavy | they assembled
just before the storm | in hallowed halls
raindrops ride the wind | the murmur of opposition surges
dusk drifts into night | as they spin their evil plans
the darkness provides cover |.the big beautiful lie, while
a fearsome interloper | an unconscionable act is executed
steals bits of food | enriching the wealthy
from the least among us | from the stunned masses
the wrens, the phoebes, the finches | the poor, the old, the sick
destruction in its wake | survival of the richest
the feeder stands mangled | as democracy dies
seed tubes ravaged | sacrificed on the altar of greed
what good are a few seeds to | these gluttonous monsters
massive beasts when | taking more than they need
to the birds they are everything | leaving the people to perish

Last night a huge storm swept through the hills. When I woke up and took a walk around the property looking for downed trees, surveying any damage that might be left in the storm’s wake, I discovered a disturbing scene at both of my feeding stations. Something strong and very big came through destroying the feeder stand and the see tubes. i recall seeing a few roust bucks on the property at dusk, it it is also likely that we were visited by a black bear.

Meanwhile on another hill in our nation’s capital congress huddled in committee at 1 am hoping to ram through a so-called big beautiful bill. The vilest of this crowd called in the big gun, namely Trump, to threaten the end of life as they know it if the holdouts didn’t vote to pass this atrocity. As I write this post, they are still at it some 17 hours later with no end in sight. Major sticking points include cuts to every little safety net that most people depend on to give massive tax breaks to the filthy rich. The people be damned

I couldn’t help seeing the similarities between a brown bear destroying feeding stations, and the maga politicians destroying our democracy, many because they fear the wrath of a selfish bully. Of course for this theme only a cleave poem would do. So called three poems on one the left column is one poem…the right, a second and the grand finale read in left to right for a third.

You know I have a glimmer for you… a few turkeys found love on the back end of my property! Baby turkeys are so cute! But it was the courtship that makes me laugh! This is how it went!

I noticed this Jenny hanging out inside the fenced part of my yard…
…enter a very excited tom who was pacing along the outside of the fence line. he did his darndest to woo her for a little tryst, but she wasn’t having it!
I walked to the back of the house to get a better look, only to discover that she was no longer there. But I did notice old tom hunched over something rocking back and forth you guessed it! Moments later she emerged, feathers disheveled scurrying away indignant at his indiscretion. I mean, imagine it! He had his way with her right out in the open! (I didn’t happen to get a photo of that! 😄). Countdown to turkey chicks! Can’t wait! 🥰

Anyhow, that’s my glimmer for today…the cycle of life on full display while I worked on a presentation for tomorrow.

much love, peace, and lovely glimmers to you!

NaGloPoWriMo 10 April 2025 – glimmer day 99

These guys are finally settling down. No puffed up feathers…no strutting! I have developed quite an appreciation for the wild Turkey. Magnificent beasts…And today’s glimmer. With so many things happening in the world today. I am so grateful that these Toms came by and reminded me that sometimes it’s okay to relax and hang out with friends. Normal can be a beautiful thing, especially in the midst of chaos.

1-

shaded gray

endless rain, gray skies
is it gray or is it grey?
cold and dreary…it’s grey

~kat

2-

the peace worker’s piece

she was on a roll
an inspiring role
i hear it was here
that she wrote by rote
a piece about ways to peace
nothing new, she knew
but a message we’d forgot
‘twas right to write it

~kat

Today I wrote a couple of poems on topic exploring the homophone…

Homophone Definitionone of two or more words pronounced alike but different in meaning or derivation or spelling (such as the words to, too, and two); or a character or group of characters pronounced the same as another character or group

NaGloPoWriMo 10 April 2025 prompt: Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem that, like Bibbins’, uses alliteration and punning. See if you can’t work in references to at least one word you have trouble spelling, and one that you’ve never quite been able to perfectly remember the meaning of.

day 87

bleeding hearts

our hearts…they bleed more every day
as the world’s woes chip away
small pieces of our tenderness
we’re not alone in our distress
over the cruelty on display

we cling to hope though, come what may
decry the wrongs they’ve put in play
they’ll find that they cannot oppress
our hearts…

determined, we will find a way
to root out hate, it’s not okay
our voices will not be suppressed
our power is togetherness
you cannot break us, not today
our hearts…

~kat

I needed a rally cry today. It’s exhausting, trying to keep up with the latest left shoe dropping in what has become a massive depository of left shoes. Those us us with two left feet should be overjoyed…I’m not BTW…overjoyed, that is. I’m exhausted.

I have been reconnecting with friends and acquaintances to check in on them…to see how they’re doing in the midst of all the chaos and destruction in our country. Some responses have given me pause…”I’m doing great! It’s about time our government leaders clean the swamp…” That is not an answer I hoped to hear, but it lets me know where I stand, and who I can trust.

Now more than ever it’s important to identify the safe places and people in our lives, and to establish meaningful connections with them; to check in with each other regularly. This is not a time in our history to go into hiding, hoping the storm will blow over eventually. We know from history that apathy and avoidance is seen as acquiescence to malevolent oppressors seeking power and control.

So…today’s glimmer assignment, should you choose to accept it…reach out to those glimmering souls in your universe. Be a light for them and surround yourself in their light. “They” (the powers that be) want us to believe we are powerless. That’s a lie. We have each other…and we are legion.

Much love, peace and glimmers to you…btw…I see you ✨💚✨

Today’s poem is a Rondeau.

The rondeau is a French form of three stanzas, totaling fourteen lines. The rhyme and rhythm are very strict. The first stanza is a quintet (five lines), the second is a quatrain (four lines), and the third and last is a sestet(six lines).

The rhyme scheme is aabba aabR aabbaR. R stands for the refrain which is the first four syllables of the first line of the poem. The rhythm is iambic tetrameter (four beats per line) except for the refrain which is iambic dimeter (two beats).

And one more thing…

Tom stopped by with a word of wisdom. You see, turkey toms generally do not appear this hunky and handsome. But they know how to gussy up, to take up space, to become larger than life by poofing their feathers as they strut into your space. It’s impressive…and intimidating. If we let it, our hearts can do the same for us. Compassion, Love, and Kindness takes up space and is strikingly impressive in the presence of hate. So in a world of MagaDons, (sounds like a dinosaur doesn’t it?! I think it’s time for them to become extinct!)…in the meantime, you know what to do…be a Tom. ✨💚✨

day 86 (part 1…poetry to follow in part 2)
