Reclaimed Spaces

She remembered many trips with her mother to the old butcher shop as a kid; the salty, pungent smell of aged meat and blood mixed with sawdust is an odor one does not easily forget, especially one whose gentle nature informed her conscience early in life that it was a cruel and barbaric practice to eat other living, breathing creatures.

Years later, after completing culinary school, she returned home, purchased the old storefront and reclaimed the space for a restaurant specializing in vegan fare.

She kept the neon sign as a novelty and called her place “Fresh Meets”.

Mr. Big

“Don’t get too close to that thing Ethan. Come back over here. He’s gonna be here soon.”

He was late. He was always late. Just this once, not for her but for Ethan, she had hoped he would come through. Ethan was getting older and needed to know his dad.

After an hour she shrugged, “C’mon buddy, doesn’t look like he’s coming.”

“That’s okay mommy,” Ethan grabbed her hand sensing her disappointment. “He’s prob’ly busy saving somebody or something.”

She smiled, “You’re probably right Ethan.”

“It’s better this way,” she thought, “absent fathers are always bigger than life.”

Thursday’s Echoes of my Neighborhood

It’s been a busy work week that started with what people on the East coast of the US called a snowpocalypse! So I’ll start with a photo log of my little car getting buried…

First hour…the morning begins… An hour later…And another ……and…24 hours later

But all in all, so beautiful! snow covered cedars and big shiny icicles!

And finally got dug out!
So to start a very busy work week! Off to work when it is dark, then back home equally dark. But the lights are so pretty! And the sights intriguing. I am grateful to be mobile and able to travel to work and back each day. Here are a few sights from my trip home each night…

All tucked in for another night! I hope you’ve had a lovely week!
