Na/GloPoWriMo 2026 Day 18

the dark side

the entrails clustered on the lawn
told a terrible tale, glossy gray,
freshly gouged, some unsuspecting
hare no doubt, perhaps a squirrel,
had met its end, its body and its
sinewed flesh swiftly whisked away

the birds that morn were hush and hid
far from the gruesome scene, no happy
chirps, no fluttering, the silence,
it was deafening, memories of a
victim’s final, terror-stricken
screams, left fading in the wind

feeders filled with tasty millet,
thistle, sunflower seeds were left
swaying in the breeze, the winter hawk
returned once more to snatch the sun
baked guts, as if nothing horrid
happened, slowly life resumed its hum

nature hides an underside, a dark
reality, a cruel truth…survival
to the fittest, or the fortunate, live
long enough to procreate, purpose
fulfilled, with nothing more to prove
the cycle of life is ever on the move

the food chain churns, the world
turns, we all succumb one day,
a wise bird heeds the signs and
sounds, a screeching hawk who
blocks the sun, and knows it’s time
to hide away, to see another day

Na/GloPoWriMo 2026 Day 18 Prompt: Today, we don’t challenge you to write all of a long, dramatic, narrative poem, but we invite you to try your hand at writing a poem that could be a section or piece of one. Include rhyme, include unlikely and dramatic scenes (maybe a poem about a bank robbery! Or an avalanche! Or Roman gladiators! Or an enormous ball held by mermaids, where there is an undercurrent (hee) of palace intrigue!) Basically, a poem with the plot of an opera (evil twins! Egyptian tombs! Star-crossed lovers! Tigers for no apparent reason!)

I chose to write today about the reality of nature. Having a front row seat these past few years has given me a deeper understanding of the magnificent, beautiful, and yes, fierceness of nature. This actually happened. I have learned I needn’t intervene or assist. Nature takes care of its own here in the woods. In town if i encountered something dead in my yard, or along the road, I wouldn’t hesitate to dispose of it if I could. But I am learning how efficient nature is. The cycle of life takes care of all manner of things…no cleanup on aisle three needed. There are magnificent creatures born for just such tasks. Even the trees when they fall become home to all forms of life before returning to the earth.

My glimmer today might be an unusual one, but it is the very hawk, the “villain” of the tale above, who is actually no villain at all. It is just a cog in the ever turning wheel that is the cycle of life. This particular hawk, a regular on our little acre here is magnificent! I hope you agree!

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

trees know

there are seasons of letting go
friends and lovers will fade away
we grow, and shed our childish ways
let go our children when they’re grown

over the years I’ve learned, trees know
when autumn comes you’ll be okay
friends and lovers will fade away
there are seasons of letting go

every heartache helps us grow
opens our hearts to each new day
leaves floating on a breeze display
how to prepare for spring…trees know
there are seasons of letting go

Na/GloPoWriMo 2026 Day 16 Prompt: Today, try writing a poem in which you describe something that cannot speak, and what it has taught or told you.

Today’s glimmer…a few succulents to restore empty flower pots to verdant glory. I thought these were unique when I happened upon them at the greenhouse center. When I looked them up and discovered their names they became even more delightful to me! Much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

Na/GloPoWriMo 2026 Day 14

remotely working

my commute is three steps
right, remote, tucked in
a corner nook, two monitors,
a tailless mouse to navigate
my nine to five, eight
hours that clock in more
like ten, days unbroken,
no set end, spilling into
night, screen strobing
glare where zoom call talking,
soft-filtered heads in squares
haggle over bottom
lines, strategies to mitigate,
review, discuss, congratulate…
postmortems of recent
mistakes, scheduling another
call because we need more
time…get more done remote
I’ve found, used to do this all
onsite, brick and mortar
cubical bound, ‘til Covid
flipped the universe and office
rats like me disbursed, haven’t
missed a sunset since, stuck in
traffic in the dark, no trudging
through car lots from
that one spot left to park,
multitasking makes it work
with colleagues from around
the globe, just a keyboard
click away, three steps, right,
is my commute…I settle in while
the WiFi boots, as hummingbirds
outside my window, left, sip
nectar, then flit-fly away

Na/GloPoWriMo 2026 Day 14 Prompt: Today, we challenge you to write a poem that similarly bridges (whether smoothly or not) the seeming divide between poetry and technological advances.

I have mentioned in the past, sometimes you have to create your own glimmer. Today’s offering meets that criteria. Meet the new side table topper on our back porch. Every time i look at this little planter it makes me smile. And that is exactly what a glimmer should do! It was quite a find at the garden center over the weekend. Makes me happy! A very happy Tuesday to you!

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

Na/GloPoWriMo 2026 Day 13

home sweet

these hills are filled with gentle folk
wide-eyed does and frolicking fawns
scampering squirrels and field mice
trotting turkey hens and toms

the sky is blue and all a-flutter
blue jays, cardinals, finches, crows
hummingbirds, phoebes, cowbirds, wrens
turkey vultures swooping low

the air is honeysuckle sweet
waves of windsong through the trees
trills and tweets in harmony
the dawn erupts in symphony

a nearby stream swells, bubbling
the ground hums softly ‘neath my feet
at dusk when all is settling down
the peepers lull us all to sleep

there is no place I’d rather be
surrounded by this sea of green
my heart has found its home at last
here in the woods, living the dream

Na/GloPoWriMo 2026 Day 13 Prompt:  Try your hand today at writing your own poem about a remembered, cherished landscape. It could be your grandmother’s backyard, your schoolyard basketball court, or a tiny strip of woods near the railroad tracks. At some point in the poem, include language or phrasing that would be unusual in normal, spoken speech – like a rhyme, or syntax that feels old-fashioned or high-toned.

Today’s Glimmer….is more like a flash, a flicker and a twitter. The hummingbirds are back! And Frankie is commandeering the best seat in the house! The other two…well you can clearly see their attitude.

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

Na/GloPoWriMo 2026 Day 12

alchemy in grandma’s kitchen

when the early morning sun streamed
through savory steam, wafting from a
bubbling stockpot in my grandma’s kitchen,
it usually meant someone was sick.
chicken on the bone, celery, carrots,
onions, garlic simmering all day
was a proven cure for seasonal ick.

“Give her my special cough syrup”
grandpa would holler from his well-worn
chair near the front room window,
Bonanza flashing in black, white,
and gray from the tv box…Hoss was
always my favorite, though everyone
said Little Joe was the best
.

After supper, grandma would open
the special cabinet, where a dark glass bottle on the top shelf was hidden, grandpa’s stash, as she eyed me, whispering
cautiously, “only because you’re sick…”

She’d measure a jigger of sweet,
whiskey into hot lemon juice with honey…
like magic it soothed my sore throat and helped me sleep, along with cool
camphorated oil rubbed on my chest, a sock
filled with salt warmed on the coal-fired stove wrapped around my neck, and cotton balls, dipped in garlic oil, stuffed
in my ears…I was a loopy, smelly sight, but
by morning, miraculously, I was healed.

At 5 years old I believed my grandma
was magical, wise, some would say, a witch.
Looking back, I am convinced that she was!

Na/GloPoWriMo 2026 Day 12 Prompt: Today, we’d like to challenge you to write your own poem that recounts a memory of a beloved relative, and something they did that echoes through your thoughts today.

And a glimmer of course…

An intriguing find deep inside my burning bush plant. Made me smile. Kind of reminds me of a turtle… am I wrong?!

Anyhoo…nature imitating…nature. It’s a wonder!

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you!
