If you don’t slow down
You’ll likely arrive too soon
To an early grave!

“Sweetie, pass me the pliers, please.”
“Which ones are those? The red handled thingamabobs?”
“No, that’s the wrench…black handle.”
“Okay. Here you go. …Carol and Tom. Do you know they have the nerve to show up together at the…”
“I’ll take that wrench now…red handle?”
“So this is a wrench. Here you go. …the party that Marge is hosting with Sue Ann. I’m not sure if she should be mad at Sue Ann or Carol..it was Sue Ann that…”
“Throw me that rag, will ya? Almost done here.”
“Danny…Which rag? You have three. The red, the green or…”
“Red’s good. Thanks babe.”
“…well Sue Ann invited the two of them. She must know it will be upsetting…”
“All done! Wanna know what I think? Tom’s a jerk and you should probably watch your back around that Sue Ann…”
“Exactly! Just what I was thinking!”

Stars taunt us with hope
ravenous for our wishes

(Stars taunt us with hope, ravenous for our wishes. / Ravenous for our wishes, childhood is lost.)
A Haiku for Ronovan Writes Weekly Haiku Challenge. This week’s prompts were Star & Child. Initially my head filled with innocent angelic-like cherubs hanging on moonbeams and dancing with the stars…but it felt too easy to fall into the obvious. I took a decidedly darker view. We hope our wishes upon stars will come true, but the reality that stars do not have the power to impact our lives is probably one of the first lessons learned as a child. So begins a life then of learning to appreciate the value of every experience good or bad. Loss of innocence perhaps, but a gain of wisdom in return. 🙂

She ran in the cold, heat and rain
everyday she would push past the pain
not to win any race
but to forget his face
moving on was her ultimate aim.

I was late! It wasn’t entirely my fault. First there was the phone call from Mom. She goes on and on…And then, there was the puppy. He had to pee. And poop, and you know how long that can take. Mortimer likes to peruse the yard…circle here and there….”c’mon Mortie! I gotta go!”
Once I finally got on the road, I hit every red light. “What next?!”
“Oh no, you’ve got to be kidding me! Maybe I’m not meant to get to that interview!” There crossing the road was a momma duck and her brood of ducklings!
I was only five minutes away and I could see flashing lights in the distance. Clearly there had been a serious accident. The traffic was backed up for over a mile.
Suddenly it occurred to me, if I had been on time I might have been right in the middle of that pile-up. At that moment, I counted my blessings…my long-winded chattering Mom, Mortimer, those cute ducklings and even every annoying red light. And I said a prayer for those travelers who were not so fortunate. Sometimes being late isn’t the worst thing that can happen.
