Cake

“Then let them eat cake.”
’twas Enlightenment’s fake news
falsehoods fade slowly

sinful indulgence
with buttercream icing, sliced
cakes of devil’s food

Shark

He thought he was dealing with a full deck of 52, but she’d slipped several cards out; her sleight of hand, stacking her odds favorably.

Pretending to be impressed with his strip shuffle, she demurely tapped the deck at the cut. After luring him all in, she revealed aces for the pot.

“Are you sure this is the place?”
“Positive. I remember that hill.”
“Well, let’s get to it then. Grab a shovel.”
“You know it was just a joke. I didn’t mean anything by it.”
“A joke you say? It has haunted me for 30 years. How could you do such a thing to a kid?”
“Jeeze man! What are you gonna do with that dirty old…”
“Woobie…it was my woobie. Does it matter? I just want it back.”
“Oh…I had a secret invisibility cloak once. It didn’t work or anyth…”
“Shut up and dig!”

Waiting to Soar

Waiting to Soar

I’m waiting…for tomorrow’s sun…for the rainbow’s somewhere…for truth’s consequences…for the stars to grant my wishes…for my turn to cross troubled water’s bridge…for a glimmer…for a sign…for a hero…for angels…for the best, yet to come…for the impossible dream…for a snowball’s chance…for justice…for peace…for the other shoe to drop…for people to wake up…for someone to give a f- …I’m waiting…feet planted firmly, rooted in fear, dogma, culture, tradition…a girl can dream.

excruciating, the wait,
baited shallow breath, fading
cruel, fickle mistress, Hope,
eternal spring seductress,
fluent in vain sweet nothings

settling for dross
soaring wingless on what if’s
nothing ventured gained
