Stars taunt us with hope
ravenous for our wishes
childhood is lost.

(Stars taunt us with hope, ravenous for our wishes. / Ravenous for our wishes, childhood is lost.)

A Haiku for Ronovan Writes Weekly Haiku Challenge. This week’s prompts were Star & Child. Initially my head filled with innocent angelic-like cherubs hanging on moonbeams and dancing with the stars…but it felt too easy to fall into the obvious. I took a decidedly darker view. We hope our wishes upon stars will come true, but the reality that stars do not have the power to impact our lives is probably one of the first lessons learned as a child.  So begins a life then of learning to appreciate the value of every experience good or bad. Loss of innocence perhaps, but a gain of wisdom in return. 🙂

The Unscientific Science of Weather Predicting

For centuries we’ve placed our hope
upon a groundling whistle pig
as gather we on Candlemas
to celebrate his yearly gig.

No fancy dopplered modern tools
can out-predict his artistry
he simply takes a look outside
to see what he has come to see.

If sunshine greets him at the dawn
he’ll likely turn his tail and hide
foreshadowing a distant Spring
‘tis fog that coaxes him outside.

Some think it’s foolish to rely
on rodents for one’s weather cues
they trust the educated guess
of weather people on the news!

But it’s a fuzzy science at best
the wise will take the groundhog’s lead
Your best predictor for the day?
Just have a look, that’s all you need!

Overcast…wet? It looks like a rainy day to me! 🙂

Run

She ran in the cold, heat and rain
everyday she would push past the pain
not to win any race
but to forget his face
moving on was her ultimate aim.

Biddy Bride

We welcome thee, fair Biddy Bride
to bless our homes and fields of gold
on sunwise walks around each well
near clootie-adorned trees of old.

As Gaia sleeps in frost kissed slumber
a fire in her belly sings
soon verdant buds of life will burst
announcing the first fruits of Spring.

The darkest nights are fading now
as dawn’s first blush illumes the sky
and birdsong bids us rise and shine
to welcome thee, our Biddy Bride!
