A Poem for Hallowe’en

Light the hearth ye mortal men
as dark descends and summer ends!
The veil between the here and then
grows thin and bids us welcome in
our kin who’ve crossed the by-and-by.
Let’s dance and celebrate my dears
Full harvest blessings bounty here
Tis not a time of doom or fear
As ancient souls brush ever near
And flash the corners of our eyes.
May life and this day find you well
this happy Hallowe’en!

Considering Merton…(a few thoughts of my own)

merton

Each moment drops a seed of life
Into the depths, past heart
and sinew to my soul…
from bitter root to fragrant flower
a garden there that bends
and groans and stretches forth
from dark to light and light to dust
with bushels full of green and lush
and memories to hold.

Memo Random

image

i didn’t get
the memo…
the one that said
there is an us
and them…
the one that said
different
is bad
or scary
or inferior.
i’m afraid i am
terribly out of step,
but i didn’t know
that it’s not about
how we play the game,
because winning
is all
that
matters.
and winners
are all that
matter.
i didn’t get
that memo…
and it has made
all
the
difference.

Magnolia

Another plot of earth, another lifetime,  but once again I am twitterpated by the elegance of one of my favorite trees…a poem from time past but still true…with a bit of camera magic to multiply my delight. What’s that I see? A faerie lighting on my fledgling tree! Can you see her too?  Magic is afoot this balmy summer’s eve.

Magnolia, emerging despite herself
now stands ten feet tall. I remember
when she was only three, wondering if her pale,
leathery leaves would survive the winter.
She has endured ice, snow, wind, glaring sun
seeming, surprisingly, stronger for it,
fragrant blossoms bursting with tenacity.

Her cumbersome, awkward extremities
have now softened – luminous, transparent,
fragile. Not hardened by life’s crushing blows,
when wind does howl, she bends as if caressed –
unguarded, grace-filled, refined, generous
with deep-rooted wisdom, doing what trees do
best – growing, yielding, season to season.

The Story of Us

IMG_2909

Remind me again how
the stars aligned when
you saw me and
I breathed you,
muddling my words
trying to say something
clever…

I must have
been…you know…
impressive
enough ’cause
here you are and here
i am, time
tested, fire-forged, blood,
sweat and hot tears, fit
together like hot dogs
and…for you I’ll say it…
ketchup.

Remind me
though, how you
knew
it was me, for my
heart never tires of
hearing you tell it.
