Nevermore – NaPoWriMo 2017 #29

Nevermore…
Should the stomachs of poor children groan
for each deserves love and a comfortable home;
the freedom to be without cruel sticks and stones.

Nevermore…
Should the drumbeats of conflict and war
send our young, future’s promise, to settle the score
of cowardly men who want more and more.

Nevermore…
Should the outcast and poor refugee
be loathed and abused, for they deserve to be
welcomed, embraced in community.

Nevermore…
Should the old, forgotten, infirmed,
be denied the respect that they’ve rightfully earned.
They’ve lessons to teach if we’ll listen and learn.

Nevermore…
Should women be ignored or dismissed
as the weaker of sexes, for I’ll tell you this…
there is no stronger force than an empowered “miss”.

Nevermore…
Should we idolize power and spew
our poisonous plans for a cold selfish few
while the rest of us scrape along just to make do.

Nevermore…Nevermore…Nevermore.

Now you may think I am being naive
to think things might change if we’d all just believe.
Well I can imagine, that’s what dreamers do.
I know that eventually dreams do come true.
So I hope for a day when our troubles are few;
when the word nevermore is a word never used.

the fish are dying
their ecosystem poisoned
you know we are next

Cottony Sweet – NaPoWriMo 2017 #27

Photo from Pixabay

a magical confection
sugar spun to perfection

wispy pastel clouds of sweet fluff
kids can’t get enough of this stuff

and who can blame them, I would agree
nothing tastes quite like cotton candy

that sticky first pinch you stuff in your mouth
tingles your tongue as it swiftly dissolves

then syrupy crystals transform into bits
of sweet crunchy morsels…how crazy is this?

oh, nothing can compare to this magical treat
cottony fluff on a rolled paper stick, sticky sweet!

an uncivil civilization – NaPoWriMo 2017 #26

an uncivil civilization

civilizations
are ultimately undone
that are not civil

NaPoWriMo 2017 #26 – the challenge today was to explore what future archeologists or aliens might think of us. I had started to write an epic historic poem based on what I imagine might happen if we don’t come to our senses…but I decided less is more. So I wrote a simple Haiku based on a digital collage I pieced together using snippets of several photos from Pixabay. I do hope this turns out to be a cautionary tale. Peace. ☮️

Combustion

warm breath on my neck
cool caresses on my skin
slow, smoldering burn

For Haiku Horizons Challenge, prompt word, “burn”.
