day 212

another too long day of chores lost to daylight…but always, there at least a moment for a glimmer. Isn’t she magnificent!

violets

blooming where planted
potted plants are not still life
bursting with secrets

The lady at the counter could see that I was a reluctant gardener. If she only knew how many lush plants I had ushered home to die. Maybe she figured that out as she looked at me with kindness, a slight tilt of her head while eyeing my selected purchase…”don’t you want one of the plants with flowers already blooming?”

The shelves of her market store were loaded with thriving, blooming specimens, bursting with purple, blue and pink blooms. Clearly, she had a knack for keeping violets.

“No, I like the green, healthy look of this one.” More than anything I wanted to prove to myself that I could master this. To feed and water and nurture something so delicate that it might one day reward me with flowers.

She seemed to know what I was thinking. As if on cue she started to list all the things a new violet parent must do to raise a thriving, happy plant. “Never let water touch the leaves, you know… (I didn’t), place your plant in a dish with water and feed it. Never spray its leaves with mist (I had wilted many a leaves in my shaded history with this practice). And give it sunlight.”

I thanked her for such good advice and left the shop with a sense of excitement and hope. Maybe this time I can pull it off. At least for now having a green living thing inside my home, will bring me joy every day…and it did.

Weeks passed and my little plant grew fuller and greener. Thankfully my cats left it alone. There was no hint of flowering but I told myself that having a living thriving plant was enough. Secretly I wondered if I should have taken the shop lady’s advice and picked out an already blooming specimen. I wondered if having a beautiful green plant was enough after all my concerted effort to do it right this time.

Just when I had made peace with my beautiful, simple, thriving green plant, and the idea that I was okay with it being flowerless, it happened! I noticed a cluster of buds hidden under the leaves.

There are so many lessons to be gleaned from this little exercise in hope, faith, persistence, kindness, and love, but I’ll leave that to you to surmise.

Much love, peace, hope, joy, and glimmers to you.

Oh…and one more thing about this late next day post…I have decided to stop feeling remorse for falling asleep, failing to finish a post before the stroke of midnight. I promised myself 365 days of glimmers and 365 days it will be even if a few spill into the next day or year by a day or two. We are likely to need glimmers then, perhaps even more, if things keep moving in the direction of the past 7 months. The important thing is that we take a moment to discover them. Peace out my peeps!

yesterday 207

the morning after too much

its insanity
death bit the apple again
‘cause monsters have rights
to wield guns of war
to assault and rape children
to disappear others…
deals with the devil
by the vilest of the beasts
buys them clemency
or seats at the top
no justice, no peace…victims
pay with innocence
a selfish nation
loses its soul drip by drip
on blood stained pages
history repeats
as ignorant blind fools sleep
soundly, unaware

I ran out of day once again yesterday. I having a hard time managing the steady crushing pace of work, caretaking, and housekeeping that keeps me engaged mindlessly dawn to night fall. Even the pleasant hours of dusk escape me, robbing me of moments to sit, to rest, to write. There is too much to do in this world that is becoming too much to bear. So here I am. It’s tomorrow with an unfinished poem…two lines, maybe three was all I could manage before sleep overtook me.

There was another mass shooting…this time in New York…more thoughts and prayers of course. There is a monster who preyed on children who is trading secrets for a pardon from our president, who may consider granting it to protect his rich friends (including many suspect himself), who feasted at her table, and to make their ugly story go away. No mention. No justice for the victims. Tariff deals are being penned under the guise of making our country rich, where the fine print clearly states this will be fulfilled by emptying the pockets of we the people as prices rise exponentially. People are continuing to disappear. And children are starving. It’s insanity. On a bright note, at least I recognize that it is!

As promised to you and to myself, I managed the capture some glimmers along the way…yesterday. And so I share them here with you. To hopefully give us something good and lovely to dwell on. I’ll BRB with today’s Day 108!

day 203

As proof that you can find glimmers ANYWHERE…I present to you my creative furball heaving feline, Frankie’s latest late night creations. I may be losing it! 🤣🤣🤣 But you gotta admit it helps to be a bit loony in times like this.

I hope you are inspired and amused by these amazing works of wretching art.

eye of the beholder

when the world turns dark
glimmers of light may be found
in absurdity

much love, peace, and glimmers to you. May you find a way to create lemonade from life’s lemons…or in my case discover the artistic talent of a simple house cat with a weak stomach…May glimmers of light and humor happen to you when you least expect it and when you need it most!

day 176

and the beat goes on

no moon in the sky
the fiddler plays in the rain
mad cows running wild

Here in this land of immigrants, are any of us eligible to be called citizen? (Except the native peoples). It’s getting crazier and crazier. Some may try to blame it on the heatwave…or the “other guy” …but there is only one person who bears responsibility …

Stay safe out there my friends…look out for each other…be kind…we all need kindness now more than ever.

Much love, peace, kindness, and glimmers.

day 167

failure to launch

a phoebe fledgling
fluttered in the rose garden
a failed first flight
her parents hovering close by
‘til she found her wings and soared

a gentle prodding
is sometimes all that we need
for a leap of faith

Yesterday, there were three phoebe chicks in the nest over my garage side door light. Year after year I’ve watched a pair of phoebes build a nest under the eave of our house. The cycle of life commences.

The laying of the eggs, one a day over several days. When the laying is done, the mother settles in for the long haul, perched over her precious brood, day after day, rain or shine. Her devoted mate tends to her every need, feeds her, stands vigil nearby, protecting his family. After only a few weeks the moment long awaited comes and the chicks emerge from their shells. Mom and dad spend their waking hours feeding these hungry featherless babies who are all mouth. They grow quickly until it’s time to fly free in a matter of a few more weeks.

This morning I noticed that the nest was empty. Another brood joining the flock that returns every spring to our acre. I noticed though that the parents were still near, agitated and not at all happy to see me. Then I saw it. A lone fledgling on my front porch stairs near the roses fluttered as it looked at me while the mom and pop swooped around me. I was concerned little tyke was exposed where the crows frequented, so I moved it under cover on the wicker settee. Soon after the parents came over, I suspect to encourage it to spread its wings. When I checked a few hours later the little family had moved on.

I have seen nestlings fail to survive on occasion and knew the sound of the parents mourning. (yes even tiny phoebe parents mourn the loss of their young who don’t survive.)  But today, the sky was blue and sunlit. And it was silent but for the soft rustle of wind through the trees.  I like to think that this little family is somewhere riding the wind. At least that’s my hope.

It reminds me that all families are precious…every single family. Every single soul. It reminds me that life offers us opportunities every day to recognize this fact, to be kind, and sometimes we are honored to help too. It costs nothing to lend a hand…to show kindness. May we seek those opportunities and rise to the occasion when presented with them.

much love, peace, and glimmers to you!
