May Day 12

soon
she will
be blooming,
magnolia,
petals bursting in brief, fragrant splendor

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 12 May 2019

And just like that, she was gone. This week brought news of the passing of an old friend. We had a peculiar relationship, connecting decades ago through poetry on an online message group. We were internet friends, but so much more. We met in the flesh for a brief brilliant moment. It was the summer solstice, I recall, a magical time when we “wise women” (the name of our writing group) decided we needed to connect beyond our computer screens. That weekend we discovered the power of soul connection under the light of a full moon.

When the message board platform ended, we “sisters” disbursed like whirligigs on the wind. That is, until the next cyber platform, Facebook, opened the door and many of us found each other again. How could we not. It was the fates that brought us together time and again after all, and it is the fates who will ultimately decide when this incarnation for each of us will end.

I shall miss my faraway friend’s light and words. But the truth is, she is still here in my heart, her words swirling in my head. Memories, anecdotes, words of wisdom, sound advice. I am forever changed for having known her. And I do believe we will meet again. I’m not sure how or when. I just know we will.

Sail on “M”. It’s been real.

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 12 May 2019

that I could lose myself so completely
to entertain the ramblings of a fool
people go crazy over a little rain
not a destination, it’s a circle
search for more
inform our steps to guide us through the haze
or at least try
the true value of a life fully lived
muted
to hear her heartbeat one more time

A ReVerse poem is a summary poem with a single line lifted from each entry of a collection of work over a particular timeframe and re-penned in chronological order as a new poem. Unlike a collaborative poem, the ReVerse features the words of one writer, providing a glimpse into their thoughts over time. I use it as a review of the previous week.

domesticated – NaPoWriMo #23

domesticated

my fierce predator, roams the halls at night
seeking prey, a twisty tie, dust bunnies,
wayward crickets, balls of yarn,
lying there catching sunbeams
i watch him sleep, dreaming
of mice that got away

A Kimo Poem for NaPoWriMo 2019 Prompt #23: write a poem about an animal.

Kimo Poems

Kimo poems are an Israeli version of haiku. Apparently, there was a need for more syllables in Hebrew. That said, most of the rules are still familiar:
• 3 lines.
• No rhymes.
• 10 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second, and 6 in the third.
Also, the kimo is focused on a single frozen image (kind of like a snapshot). So it’s uncommon to have any movement happening in kimo poems.

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 14 April 2019

Happy Sunday! It’s raining today, but I’m not complaining. Spring rains that settle the pollen that is floating in the air like snowflakes, are my friend. I know some of you can relate. It’s getting worse they say in the news, with longer spells of pollen, my state being one of the worst. But you didn’t come here to hear me talk about the weather or pollen. It is this week’s ReVerse that is the star of the show. A fine reVerse at that, full of words that I’ve let flow as you know if you’ve been following me. Lots of words in fact, and a rollercoaster of emotions colored this past week. Just like life, the NaPoWriMo prompts have been challenging and wonderful. And I for one am grateful for this opportunity to empty my head in more than micro-spurts, keeping the muse entertained in all her revery. It is spring after all. The ground is greening, trees and flowers are blooming. I could get used to this. What bliss! No matter that it’s raining still, it is the perfect time to stay inside, sip some jasmine tea and write. Have a wonderful week!

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 14 April 2019

bliss, that’s all i need to know
stones to gather
jump the shark if you dare
we sure are gonna miss you
I’m afraid my genes are laced with lunacy
limp locks a-drooping from curly-topped crowns,
who am i, but flesh and blood,
my dreams faded over time
fleeting childhood memories etched in my heart

Instant Pot Creamy Vegetable/Chickpea Tortellini Soup

I’ve been wanting to do a tortellini soup for a while. The recipe below is my own creation, based on reading several versions. If you like chorizo sausage, you can add a pound of chopped chorizo to the initial sauté. Being an ovo-lacto-pescatarian (I eat eggs, milk and fish with my veggies), I like to keep my soups meatless.

Once again, as I’m finding with these recipes, prepping the fresh veggies took longer than the actual cooking time. You could easily make this on the stovetop. What I like about the instant pot is that you don’t have to worry about it while it’s cooking. No stirring, no pot-watching. And it cooks in a fraction of the time.

Instant Pot Creamy Vegetable/Chickpea Tortellini Soup

Ingredients

1 Sweet Onion – Diced
3 Celery Stalks – Diced
3 Carrots – Diced
2 Garlic Cloves – Diced
2 TBS Olive Oil
5 Cups Vegetable Broth
1 Can Ro-Tel / or Stewed Tomatoes
2 Cans of Garbanzo Beans, Drained
1 Tsp Dried Basil
1 Tsp Dried Thyme
6-8 Cups Mixed Super Greens (blend of Swiss chard, spinach arugula, or kale) – Chopped
10-12 oz – Fresh Cheese Tortellini (for frozen or dried see below)
1 Cup Cream
Salt and Pepper to taste.

Prepare fresh vegetables. Add olive oil and vegetables and garlic to the instant pot. Set on sauté and stir until onions are translucent. Add broth, stewed tomatoes, garbanzo beans, basil and thyme to the pot. (If you are using frozen or dried tortellini add with the broth). Seal and cook for 5 minutes (my pot has a soup setting). Wait a few minutes before releasing the steam.

Add greens, fresh tortellini to the pot and simmer on sauté for about 5 minutes, stirring gently.

Blend in cream. Salt and pepper to taste.

Delicious and so easy to prepare. Serve immediately. The tortellini will absorb the broth if stored. You may need to add liquid to reheat. Or leave as is and call it stew! For me, this batch is another week’s worth of delicious home-made soup for my packed lunch. Bon Appetit!
