lost sheep

lost sheep

I worry for them, poor lost sheep
like lemmings rushing toward the edge
hungry for their shepherd’s lies
they hang onto his every tweet
he soothes them with vague promises
that he will likely never keep
fills their heads with fear and dread
it haunts them while they sleep
their wretched souls to him they pledge
hungry for their shepherd’s lies
into the dark abyss they leap

Magic 11 poem – my variation on the Magic 9 poem, a 9-line poem that doesn’t have any rules as far as meter or subject matter–just a rhyme scheme: abacadaba. Enter the Magic 11 abracadabra poem with the r’s intact, placeholders for a refrain. Rhyme scheme: abRacadabRa. (R for the refrain).

finding normal

finding normal

normal greets me every day
surrounding me in green
i don’t need a new normal
with nature on display
trees sway softly in the breeze
bird are singing, squirrels play
they’re not worried how to be
social distancing, in place
wearIng a mask, raw hands, but clean
I don’t need a new normal
when earth’s old normal’s here to stay

And a few

A Magic 11 poem. Rhyme scheme a-b-R (repeating line) – a-C-a-d-a-b-R-a.

For Mother’s Day

I remember every first moment
your first breath, first teeth, first steps,
you consumed me for decades
first words, I understood what you meant
even when others heard gibberish
first days of school, every event
ballgames, plays, dances, graduations
first loves, every dream you dreamt
I was there for every fail and success
you consumed me for decades
even now your presence fills this empty nest

mornings like this

mornings like this

on mornings like this, roused by the dawn
dreams fade away like mist o’er the swale
there’s no sleeping in, no lingering
the birds in the trees break into song
squirrels scamper, the hinds are grazing,
staying in bed right now would be wrong
wafts of fresh coffee swirl in the air
bleary-eyed, give it a stretch and a yawn
feet to the floor, breathe deeply, exhale
there’s no sleeping in, no lingering
the days won’t wait, in a blink they’re gone

social media jungle

social media jungle

my Instagram is filled with names
of voyeurs that I do not know
prospective followers of mine
but I’m not sure they’re who they claim
with avatars from photo stock
and handles oft’ misspelled and lame
it could well be that they are bots
ill-intentioned moles whose aim
is not in my best interest, trolls,
prospective followers of mine
denied, I’m on to their deceptive game
