in a fog

in a fog

while people mourn the sick and dead
trump proclaims ‘we’re rounding the turn’
there’s no end to the lies he churns
he fills his sycophants with dread
‘it’s all a hoax, trust me instead…
masks? wear them or not…you choose
stop testing, silence the fake news!’

we’ll all soon have a choice to make
we have a voice in what’s at stake
this time we can’t afford to lose

clouds drench the hollow
blooms of opaque gray matter
obscure perception

Tanka Tuesday – The Illusion of Power

when the wind
bellows through a forest
it’s the trees
that yield,
not those that are unbending,
that endure unmoved

A Shadorma (3/5/3/3/7/5) for Colleen’s Tanka Tuesday Poetry Challenge. Today’s Prompt Theme – “The Illusion of Power”.

blooms from dust

blooms from dust

weeds burst into seed
wintering beneath the dust
first to bloom come spring

what does it say about our soul
when half of us subscribe to hate
‘twas apathy led to this fate
spiraling down this rabbit hole
inhabited by greedy trolls
who prey upon us while we sleep
and fill our heads with lies and tweets
but half of us are wide awake
we’ll right what’s wrong, for all our sake,
that day when love takes to the streets

just breathe

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA – Milford Pond by Trent P McDonald

just breathe

I keep forgetting to breathe. The fear of dreadful unknowns fills my head. Though, not entirely unknown, having been ravaged by hate, unmanaged pandemics, misogyny, injustice, racism, bigotry, and a planet on fire for these last few horrible years, I am certain another four years of the same insanity would surely undo all that we hold decent and righteous and good. All of this hinging on a simple checkmark in a box, and on the outcome of a fragile, broken system. Not breathing seems a reasonable thing to do in times like these, though not very wise…

autumn’s reflection
ruddy treetops on blue glass
where swans drift slowly
barely forming waves, the air
still, cool as it fills my burning lungs

A TankaProse for Colleen’s Tanka Tuesday Challenge inspired by the photo above by Trent McDonald and the prompt words Move (drift) and Make (forming).

if only…

if only…

consider Gaia’s cycling days
her seasons gently yield and flow
no forced succession, letting go,
no power struggles, coups, or frays

if only men could learn her ways
and realize all things must end
in order to emerge again
if only we could just be still
and listen to the wind and chill
perhaps our enmity might mend

there’s no calm, no eye
‘midst the tempests formed by men
only destruction
