“How much farther?”
“Just a few more steps Gran. Don’t peek!”
“Well how can I, when you’ve got me blindfolded! Honestly, what is this about?”
“You’ll see!” the two lads chimed. After Pops died they wanted to do something nice for their dear old Gran. They’d located her girlhood friend. She was waiting at the dockside restaurant.
“We’re here!!” the oldest exclaimed, while the younger removed the blindfold.
Gran squinted past their beaming faces at the woman sitting before them.
“You!!!! You old bitch!”
The boys’ hearts sank.
“God, I’ve missed you!” Gran cried as she embraced her old friend.

“Keep in touch,” we all promise. Yet life seems to take over in all directions. Meeting an old friend brings back the youthful spirit in everyone – in memories at least. Nice story.’

Thank you James. Modern technology and mobility have fractured the tight community clusters of old, with everyone scattering to the wind. But Facebook and the like, despite their flaws, has helped to spark that youthful spirit by providing us a platform to reconnect with distant relatives and friends. I admit, though, there is truly nothing like an eye to eye reunion and the full-bodied, long embrace of two old friends. 😊

Dear Kat,
From set up to momentary bait and switch to embrace, this fired on all cylinders. Love it!

Thank you Rochelle. The ending surprised me too, if you know what I mean. It could very well have been a disaster…or so it was, at first thought. I was happy to turn it back around at the last minute. Within the course of writing a flash fiction story, one does not always see the twist at the end until the end!
Peace to you,
kat

Thank you Trent. The surprise at the end was a surprise to even me. I love it when that happens in the course of writing a story. It’s like a eureka moment! 😊
