While We Sleep – A Ghazal

The Dawn by John la Farge, 1899

Saving dreamers from eternal sleep,
she rips night’s veil asunder while we sleep.

The moon grows pale as slowly she descends,
to dip past the horizon while we sleep.

And fiery sun glows red at cusp of day,
his passion rousing creatures while we sleep.

But Dawn controls this dance of vast extremes
she summons mist to cool us while we sleep.

Though utter darkness looms, our souls to keep,
we trust Dawn to protect us while we sleep.

A Ghazal for Jane Dougherty’s Weekly Poetry Challenge, prompt word: “Dawn”. You can learn more about the Ghazal at Shadow Poetry. This form is not for the faint of heart. But I do encourage you to give it a go. You’ll feel so accomplished if and when you are able to pull it off. (Hoping I managed at least a middling Ghazal my first try. This form will take some practice!)

Blame it on the Moons

blame it on the moon, the moon, the moon…
the world is tilted out of kilter
and it’s evident we’re all quite mad!

polar ice caps have gotten soupy
tempests rage and the earth’s crust rumbles
naysaying oafs howl, “it’s not that bad!”

hide your heads like ostriches rooting
pretend impending doom cannot be stopped
know you could’ve changed it…wish you had…

A few attempts of a new form, the Tilus [tee-loo-hz], for Jane Dougherty’s poetry challenge inspired by Franz Marc’s 1911 painting: “Blue Horses” or Die grossen blauen Pferde (The Large Blue Horses).

you’ve been warned

Franz_Marc-In_the_Rain(Im_Regen)_(1912)

when planning for a lovely stroll,
with dog in tow,
to play some fetch
at river’s edge

take care to notice red dawn skies
-word to the wise-
you might regret
the plans you’ve set

if you ignore the coming storms
when you’ve been warned
you’ll feel the pain…
relentless rain.

A Minute Poem for Jane Dougherty’s Poetry Challenge based on the painting by Franz Marc entitled “In the Rain”, including the following word prompts: Rain, Red, Relentless, River, Regrets.

Never Forget – A Trio of Cinquains

Le Somnambule

Le Somnambule by Marc Chagall

A storm
called Katrina
swallowed The Big Easy
abandoned, desperation in
whirlwind

poison,
death infested,
crested, licking the walls
relentless, inescapable
slurry

beings
young and not so
took to the muck alone
it was every soul for themselves
human.

A Cinquain written for Jane Dougherty’s Poetry Challenge based on the painting Le Somnambule (Sleep Walker) by Marc Chagall. When I saw this painting I immediately thought about Hurricane Katrina. This painting represents to me the desperation of the people caught in the storm’s swell and the tragedy of having to leave their beloved pets behind…and the tragedy of our government at the time looking away while the world watched in horror. It was the cat really, who took me there…looking away from the window as if she knew. I used a string of three Cinquains to tell the story. Some things are etched in our memories…for a reason. That we never forget…that we remember so we may avoid repeating the sins of our past. Peace all!
