insomnia

my much meter is tripping too
no time for rest; too much to do
and when night falls I’m up past two
I’d dream of sleep, if only

what bitter karma did I sow
to reap this misery, this slow
slow drip, struggle is all I know
I heard the good die young

well, if that’s true I’m past my prime
I’ve had enough of this lifetime
I just want sleep, is that a crime?
the cow jumped over the moon

3 A.M.

3 A.M.

I forgot to lock my head
left it wide open, in fact, how
careless of me, before stretching
my toes to the memory foam’s edge,
wrapped to my ears in satin-lined
down. Of course I can’t sleep, with
that incessant drip, drip, drip, because,
wouldn’t you know, I left my brain on too,
just a smidge, enough to dry up the well
water, water everywhere, dry to my bones,
tired of counting sheep, stupid sheep, at
three A.M. while a moth slams Itself
against the strobing blue-green light
from the smoke alarm on the ceiling. I know,
I know it’s hard to resist crazy, when
it courses through your veins, damn weak
link in the old double helix, instinct perhaps,
but, about that door, we don’t live in a barn
here you know…yeah, I know, but what about living in a barn is meant to dissuade me? It’s
4:27 A.M. now, two more hours before dawn
or the alarm clock, whichever comes first,
ruining a decent REM cycle…if only
I’d locked my head before turning in…
4:51 am and counting…4:52…4:53…

Insomniac’s Lullaby

soft the gloaming hush descends
settle now your weary head
pray for blessings, make amends
day is done, it’s time for bed

settle now your weary head
serenaded by the night
day is done, it’s time for bed
draw your coverlet up tight

serenaded by the night
humming street lights, traffic zoom
draw your coverlet up tight
safe and snug in your bedroom

humming street lights, traffic zoom
cricket chatter, bullfrog peeps
safe and snug in your bedroom
babies wailing, cats in heat

crickets chatter, bullfrogs peep
ticking clocks, water dripping
babies wailing, cats in heat
rattling snores, fan cords clicking

ticking clocks, water dripping
try to sleep, soon morning comes
rattling snores, fan cords clicking
curse the night’s incessant hum

try to sleep, soon morning comes
count some sheep, try sipping tea
curse the night’s incessant hum
early to bed…now it’s 3

count some sheep, try sipping tea
pray for blessings, make amends
early to bed…now it’s 3
soft the gloaming hush descends

Insomniacs and Fools

Luna by kat 2017

1-
it’s early morning drenched in dew
the witching hour won’t let me sleep
i’m an insomniac, it’s true
it’s early morning drenched in dew,
roused by the whispers of my muse
who tells me, “no use counting sheep”
it’s early morning drenched in dew,
the witching hour won’t let me sleep

2-
I feel so foolish for crying
It’s not that I’m not strong, you know
Sometimes it’s wise to stop trying
I feel so foolish for crying
Nothing works when someone’s lying
Relationships need trust to grow
I feel so foolish for crying
It’s not that I’m not strong, you know

April Poetry Month – A Poem a Day #6

It’s Wednesday…the in-between day of the workweek for many. With this in mind, I chose the Palindrome Poem form. It’s a tricky bugger. To pull it off requires tweaking and re-tweaking the words and lines; extraneous connectors and fluff just muddy the mirror image you are trying to convey. This form takes a bit of practice. This is my first go at the Palindrome.  I hope I did it justice! 🙂

A Palindrome Poem, also known as Mirrored Poetry, by definition, is a word, phrase, verse, sentence, or even poem that reads the same forward or backward. It stems from the Greek word palindromos: palin, meaning again, and dromos, meaning a running. Combining the two together, the Greek meaning gives us, running back again. The carefully placed words form the same sentence, whether it is read forward or backward. For example, ‘Mirrored images reflect images mirrored’ which includes a word in the center as a reversal point for the sentence or even the poem.

Insomnia

sleep
is elusive
dreamless spinning mind
midst consuming darkness
restless weariness but
brilliance in-between
moments of clarity
insomnia…
clarity of moments
in-between brilliance
but weariness restless
darkness consuming midst
mind spinning dreamless
elusive is
sleep
