day 203

As proof that you can find glimmers ANYWHERE…I present to you my creative furball heaving feline, Frankie’s latest late night creations. I may be losing it! 🤣🤣🤣 But you gotta admit it helps to be a bit loony in times like this.

I hope you are inspired and amused by these amazing works of wretching art.

eye of the beholder

when the world turns dark
glimmers of light may be found
in absurdity

much love, peace, and glimmers to you. May you find a way to create lemonade from life’s lemons…or in my case discover the artistic talent of a simple house cat with a weak stomach…May glimmers of light and humor happen to you when you least expect it and when you need it most!

Here in this land of immigrants, are any of us eligible to be called citizen? (Except the native peoples). It’s getting crazier and crazier. Some may try to blame it on the heatwave…or the “other guy” …but there is only one person who bears responsibility …

Stay safe out there my friends…look out for each other…be kind…we all need kindness now more than ever.

Much love, peace, kindness, and glimmers.

day 167

failure to launch

a phoebe fledgling
fluttered in the rose garden
a failed first flight
her parents hovering close by
‘til she found her wings and soared

a gentle prodding
is sometimes all that we need
for a leap of faith

Yesterday, there were three phoebe chicks in the nest over my garage side door light. Year after year I’ve watched a pair of phoebes build a nest under the eave of our house. The cycle of life commences.

The laying of the eggs, one a day over several days. When the laying is done, the mother settles in for the long haul, perched over her precious brood, day after day, rain or shine. Her devoted mate tends to her every need, feeds her, stands vigil nearby, protecting his family. After only a few weeks the moment long awaited comes and the chicks emerge from their shells. Mom and dad spend their waking hours feeding these hungry featherless babies who are all mouth. They grow quickly until it’s time to fly free in a matter of a few more weeks.

This morning I noticed that the nest was empty. Another brood joining the flock that returns every spring to our acre. I noticed though that the parents were still near, agitated and not at all happy to see me. Then I saw it. A lone fledgling on my front porch stairs near the roses fluttered as it looked at me while the mom and pop swooped around me. I was concerned little tyke was exposed where the crows frequented, so I moved it under cover on the wicker settee. Soon after the parents came over, I suspect to encourage it to spread its wings. When I checked a few hours later the little family had moved on.

I have seen nestlings fail to survive on occasion and knew the sound of the parents mourning. (yes even tiny phoebe parents mourn the loss of their young who don’t survive.)  But today, the sky was blue and sunlit. And it was silent but for the soft rustle of wind through the trees.  I like to think that this little family is somewhere riding the wind. At least that’s my hope.

It reminds me that all families are precious…every single family. Every single soul. It reminds me that life offers us opportunities every day to recognize this fact, to be kind, and sometimes we are honored to help too. It costs nothing to lend a hand…to show kindness. May we seek those opportunities and rise to the occasion when presented with them.

much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

day 159

not lost

off the preplanned path
a detour may reveal
the wondrous unknown

~kat

I depend heavily on my car’s GPS to get me to my destinations. Most of the time I get where I am going with no issue. Other times, like today, the system has a hiccup. I knew that I needed to head north to reach the final part of the route, but the determined voice from my dashboard insisted I go south.

I went north, which sent the computer into a bossy tirade. She, ( I have mine set with a female voice with a British accent ) demanded I make a U-turn and head south at the next 7 crossroads. And I kept ignoring her until the GPS realized I was right, recalibrated itself and finally got back on track. As we neared the final leg of the trip, I got an important phone call. I missed my exit.

I was happy this time to be admonished by that familiar voice and ready to comply. There was an exit in four and a half miles, but as I would discover no reentry ramp. I refused to concede that I was lost. Eventually GPS directed me to take a scenic route…a narrow county road that weaved past farms and deeper into a tree-lined road. I hoped at least this time she wasn’t confusing her north from her south! Retracing 5 miles in unfamiliar places can be unsettling, but I was reassured when my destination icon appeared on the screen as we moved closer and closer.

As I emerged from the woods I found myself entering the main road of my daughter’s subdivision, just one block away from her house! You might think at this point in my story I heaved a huge sigh of relief. I didn’t. Not then. What took my breath away and caused me to pause…to breathe, was back amidst the trees. It was so beautiful! I took a photo with the intention of sharing it with you.

Wrong turns, detours, resets, and trusting one’s gut can sometimes develop into something wonderful. Next time you find yourself off the path, don’t jump to the “L” word (as in “lost”) too quickly. Take a breath and give the universe a moment to show you where you are, and what you could have missed by following directions to the letter. You might be pleasantly surprised, like I was today.

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you. And happy travels to you! ✨✨✨💚💚💚✨✨✨

days 152, 153, 154, 155…it’s been a bit of a blur

Glimmer 152: Found at our home away from home…An Old World Rock Pigeon feather. AKA a Homing pigeon. Fun facts: The rock Pigeon is a wild ancestor of all domestic and feral pigeons, inhabiting coasts, cliffs, and caves. Pairs nest in rock crevices, often mating for life. They are known for their ability to fly very long distances to return to their homes, navigating using the sun’s position and the earth’s magnetic fields. Thanks to this ability, pigeons were used as messengers, particularly during World Wars I and II. I believe this little left behind messenger’s note has a message for me too. ✨💚✨

Hello my creative friends. Rest assured I am still here. I have been traveling…a lot. On Tuesday by car, 10 hours round trip, to bring Gabby to my daughter’s for safekeeping while we are away.

On Wednesday, 4 hours by car, 2 hours by check in and TSA with my wife in a wheelchair and 5 hours in air to cross country, 2,483 miles to be exact, give or take, to attend my niece’s wedding.

On Thursday, I crashed, personally, not the plane of course, though it was an unusually bumpy flight. 😳 I needed a day to recover. I am an old lady by some folk’s standards. One year shy of 70 as of Monday (you can do the math) and me wondering how I can keep this pace up. Working full time, caring for a partner with a debilitating disability, managing a household…

It’s an interesting type of imposter syndrome. Feeling young of mind and heart only to be reminded by my body when I push it too far. Today we will be tasked with dipping pretzels in white chocolate, sprinkling them with burgundy colored sugar sprinkles. I’m told by my sister that the sprinkles match the groom’s shirt color. We are honored to be assigned such an important task! 🥰

Tomorrow is the wedding. I’ll send some glimmers, of which I’m sure there will be many. Then on Sunday…a day on the road, a red eye flight back home arriving Monday morning…a four hour car trip, a recovery nap and Tuesday a road trip to fetch Gabby who is currently being spoiled by my daughter as you saw above. Then Wednesday back to work and routine. I could say, I’m too old for this shit, but I won’t. I am just so happy and grateful to be here, alive and well enough to still experience the blessings of this blip of a life. I’m dropping a few glimmers for you here to make up for my absence. Be back to it soon!

Some additional poetic offerings…and a new form…the Pi-Ku! Who knew!!! A 3-1-4 haiku style poem. Love it!
