Fragility

It was the most beautiful house on the harbor, resting on pylons in the shallows surrounded by water lilies and draped in wisteria. The Otis Family lived there for over a hundred years…until the fire.

I remember the flames lapping the night sky turning it an angry red, the heavy smoke eclipsing the full moon. That night I became acquainted with death and the fragility of life.

I visit the harbor when I am home. T’was the flu that kept me from the party that night. The stupid flu that nearly took my life that summer saved me.

Sand Castle

Behind the iron gate she stands
Chateau de Sable, on the shore
memory infused walls of clay
whispering dreamy tales of yore.

Though the gales whip and bluster
Behind the iron gate she stands
Harboring the earthbound specters
who haunt her corridors of sand.

Those who venture for a gander
novice paranormal seekers
behind the iron gate she stands
to delight these wide-eyed peepers.

Spectacled eternal prison
enlightened pilgrims understand
Chateau de Sable holds no light
behind the iron gate she stands.

Stairway to Freedom

The effects of the drug were wearing off.

“Think Angela! That disgusting man will be back soon.”

She scanned the room. There was a filthy cot and there…on the wall, a metal framed photo. Metal!

Angela broke off part of frame and furiously chipped away pieces of the window frame.

Footsteps!

They were getting louder. Her heart was racing as she worked faster, fingers bleeding, when the door behind her crashed open.

“Are you okay ma’am?”

Angela turned in terror and collapsed into the arms of the detective.

What Matters Most

Private hanger?! Chartered flight!? Sandra couldn’t believe Michael had such means. But that didn’t matter to her. Their relationship had begun quite innocently. It started with a common “like” on a friend of a friend’s social media page. For the next year there were chats and phone conversations. A lovely friendship developed, and more. They both felt it.

As Sandra gazed out the window on the approach to the island, her heart skipped a beat. It was not the sight of the lavish estate that touched her so. There, at the end of the runway Michael was waiting.
