Haiku Penurious – Friday’s Word of the Day Haiku

penurious

What a tricky little word, “penurious”…today’s Dictionary.com Word of the Day. On one hand it is a descriptor for miserly, stingy, parsimonious types…and on the other hand, it represents those who are poor, destitute, indigent, lacking in means and resources. A dilemma. But not impossible to incorporate into a single Haiku.  Especially if one employs a bit of thesaurus slight of word.

(If you are new here, I challenge myself every Friday to take Dictionary.com’s word of the day and use it in a Haiku – a three line poem with 5 syllables on line 1 & 3 and 7 syllables on line).

And so, here is my attempt at capturing the dual nature of this rather timely word…I give you…

Haiku Penurious…

Penurious souls
Seek haven from stingy brutes,
Misers with no soul.

Cover & Color – A Haiku

‘Neath stained canopies
we yawn through darkening days
come winter we’ll sleep.

(“Neath stained canopies we yawn through darkening days.” / “We yawn through darkening days, come winter we’ll sleep.”)

So…this week’s Haiku challenge prompts were “Cover” and “Color”. Last week I used the Thesaurus for my trio, but more as a dictionary to get ideas on various definitions of the prompt words.  This week I did a full out Thesaurus flip, switching out words in my Haiku. Thank for the reminder and suggestion Ron.  I like how this haiku turned out, while maintaining the
“color” of the prompt words, I was able to “cover” the topic using alternatives that sounded a bit more creative. For more Haiku on this prompt click HERE.

Salt

His lips brushed her cheek
as salty tears stung his tongue,
she sighed, sweet release.

Just for good measure
she tossed salt o’er her shoulder,
brackish atonement.

Flavor enhancing,
preservation from decay
salty alchemy.

Gold ‘n Crane Haiku

Ronovan’s Haiku Challenge this week presented the words, “Gold” and “Crane”, and as he often does, encouraged us to check our thesaurus out for these multifaceted gems. Naturally, once I found myself in synonym heaven, it was impossible to write just one Haiku…so I give you three. If you’d like to read more or join the challenge click HERE.

crane

More precious than pure gold
Fold one thousand paper cranes
Healing dreams come true.

Cauldrons of apples
golden delicious butter
suspended on cranes.

She was a rude oaf
craning her neck, eavesdropping
hoarding lies, like gold.

Reflections on a Street Lamp in the Rain

streetlamp

Through rain droplets
ambient lamp light glows warm
love is in the air.

Street
lamps shine
dreamlike through
fat rain droplets
guiding me
safely
home

I hardly noticed
it was raining that evening
when I saw you there
waiting under the lamp light…
like moth to flame, besotted.

(Haiku~Sept~Tanka)

A Haiku is a 3 line poem/syllables: 5-7-5; a Sept is a 7 line poem/syllables 1-2-3-4-3-2-1; and a Tanka is a 5-line poem/syllables: 5-7-5-7-7. I discovered this triune format through a poetry challenge and love the flow of it. J
