Friday’s Word of the Day Haiku

Happy Friday! I just have to say, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE today’s word of the day from Dictionary.com. For those of us who love words and making up words (I’m guilty) and playing with words, this is the quintessential concept!!! And there is even a WORD for it!

From Dictionary.com, a bit of history about this word…
Spoonerism is derived from the name of ReverendWilliam Archibald Spooner, a scholar at New College inOxford who was known for making such verbal slips.The term entered English around 1900.

Here are a few examples of Spoonerisms from Fun with Words to help you with its definition:

fighting a liar	lighting a fire

Those who wove lording
are crafty spoonerists
bust a jit crazy!

Terra Firma

You must stand your ground
to be seen as serious…
it’s wise not to blink.

Far from being firm,
when terra firma trembles
she scales richter’s heights.

Her grounds for leaving
bordered on insanity…
she hated green paint.

In Black & White

Wow! This challenge was a CHALLENGE. I never would have imagined such simple words could cause me such angst. I noticed others stepped up to the task with ease and grace. Those Haiku that I have read so far are wonderful! You all made it look so easy! Bravo!

As for me this particular word pair came kicking and screaming from my brain to the page. Maybe it was the rain? Not enough coffee? No excuses! I have always said that I like a challenge. Thanks once again Ronovan for supplying me with just that. If you’d like to give it a go, click HERE.

The prompts for this Haiku Challenge from RonovanWrites are: Black & White. I came up with three. Why, you ask? Because I suppose I am a (m)utton for punishment! Haha! Get it? mutton…glutton…I digress. I suppose it has more to do with the fact that I have gotten in the habit of consulting my thesaurus and dictionary for these challenges, so naturally, to give these words full voice required more than one. 🙂

Oops…Friday’s Word of the Day Haiku…I can explain…

Some may see my tardy entry for this week’s word of the day haiku as a symptom. But I assure you that I managed to be out and about on Black Friday midday, not at the crack of dawn, and if you must know, my mission was to obtain necessities for my dear pets…dog food, cat food and the like. I do admit that I couldn’t resist picking up several toys…they were on SALE and Christmas is coming after all. But that doesn’t make me an oniomaniac does it? I only shopped at one store…really…well, maybe two…or was it three!!!? At any rate, here’s my haiku! Happy Weekend to you!
