Alone Shooter – NaPoWriMo 2018 Day 15

Alone Shooter

(A Cleave Poem, meant to be read in three parts, top to bottom, first column, second column, then the / entire line.)

I’m going to be a legend / I know I don’t matter
the whole world will know me / they treat me like I don’t exist
the ones that say / it’s better that way, I think
I’m a weirdo, I’m strange / better than the beatings and
I’ll show them / the broken bones
they won’t be laughing then / how could someone treat a kid like this?
when I do what I do / I tried to be good
I’ve been planning for years / but I was never good enough
the world makes it so easy / failure is all I know
for freedom fighters like me / I never had a chance, you know
we’re an elite militia, genius, / to be normal, what’s that?
armed to the teeth / life’s a bitch and then you die
I’m gonna make my mark / and when I’m gone
you’ll remember my name / no one will miss me
I’ll write it for you in blood / worm-feed in an unmarked grave

The prompt for today’s NaPoWriMo 2018 Day 15 was: write a poem in which a villain faces an unfortunate situation, and is revealed to be human (but still evil). There is tragedy to be found in the life of the villains of our time.

NaPoWriMo 2018 – Day 14

rarely do I remember my dreams
but if I did I’d imagine this…
while passing time at a wobbly table
sipping green tea from a ballet slipper
my dentist passed by in a floating rowboat
with hammerhead sharks in swift pursuit
I didn’t think it odd at all…that’s odd
that they were flying over head
as seagulls swam around in pools
nipping the teacups that covered my toes

it’s only my imagination
there is no interpretation
a made up, wild dream, just for fun
using the prompt words one by one
don’t bother wondering what it means
rarely do I remember my dreams
that’s probably a very good thing

A bit more craziness for NaPoWriMo 2018 Day 14. Still trying to unplug from a crazy long week. The prompt for today: Choose one (or more) of the following words, and write about what it means to dream of these things: Teacup, Hammer, Seagull, Ballet slipper, Shark, Wobbly table, Dentist, Rowboat.

As you saw, I chose them all. No this is not a true recollection. My dreams, the ones I remember lately, have been a bit strange. I think I need a vacation! 😜

Idiomiotic

Idiomiotic
(yes it’s a made up word…😜…do not try this at home!)

well, it’s always something, except when it’s not
for your two cent’s worth, I’ll give you a penny
what a deal, it’s a steal, a real bargain that’s hot,
hook, line and sinker, want more? I’ve got plenty
yes, I could go on and on, with this row,
spinning these idioms, ad hoc, ad nauseum
I’ll toss some cliches in the mix you might know,
or not, I can flip flop, flop flip with the best of them
but it’s getting late and it’s been a long week
it’s time to wind down, calm things down for the night
count my blessings, count sheep, pray my soul to keep
it’s a nightmare just waiting to happen, sleep tight
no witching hour wake up haunts at 3 a.m.
adrift on soft clouds, undisturbed R.E.M.
cause it’s always something, except when it’s not
tired, exhausted, this poem’s not my best
if there was a prompt for today, I forgot
you can thank me later, I’ll give it a rest!

Coined a few, perhaps a few too many, idioms for today’s NaPoWriMo 2018 Day 13 Prompt: write a poem in which the words or meaning of a familiar phrase get up-ended.

In the City – NaPoWriMo 2018 Day 12

I am a windy city, mid-westerner transplanted in this land of giants, a southern city nestled between looming blue mountain peaks. My home sits under a giant star on a century-old plot steps away from the site of World War victory gardens that have sprouted rows of two-storied townhouses.

I will likely breathe my last here in this place of contradictions; of backwoods red-neckers and modern progressive high-risers, old-timers and Gen Z’s. It’s ironic that I moved here to be closer to my children and grandchildren. I rarely see them, life and busyness nipping at their heels, but I love it here just the same. This strange place, with its lilac-honeysuckle infused breezes, evergreen spaces, magnolia trees and mist-draped hollows, is growing on me. My Chicago twang has noticeably tempered to a smooth southern drawl. Y’all come see me sometime.

pause with me a spell
where sunlight bleeds through pine trees
and mourning doves coo

we’ll  sip sweetened tea
and talk about the weather
while nor’easterns swell

A Haibun/with 2 Senryu  for NaPoWriMo 2018 Day 12 Challenge Prompt: write a haibun that takes in the natural landscape of the place you live. It may be the high sierra, dusty plains, lush rainforest, or a suburbia of tiny, identical houses – but wherever you live, here’s your chance to bring it to life through the charming mix-and-match methodology of haibun.

Future Self – NaPoWriMo 2018 Day 11

“Tell me where would you like to be five years from now?”

It’s a standard question posed
at interviews and seminars, one
that swallows me whole into
glaring sheets of paper, pen at
the ready, its ball head scratching
out the reality of my aspiration-less
existence in congealed blue-black
ink blots, truth on display, empty,
thoughtless nothingness.

All I know for certain is
now, perhaps I am
jaded, hesitant,
to scribble pipe dreams on
a page that history has proved,
my history, that plans mean
nothing, because change has
the upper hand; the fates and
karma and this, “The best laid
plans…” you know. I am a
mouse, black eyes bulging,
nibbling nervously on
scrap, relieved to be
breathing. Don’t ask me to
consult my future self. I am
much too busy surviving
the moment.

For NaPoWriMo 2018 Day 11 Prompt: a poem that addresses the future, answering the questions “What does y(our) future provide? What is your future state of mind? If you are a citizen of the “union” that is your body, what is your future “state of the union” address?” (Photo by Alexas_Fotos at Pixabay.com)
