day 254

no cause for celebration

they got him
justice will be served
swift and cold
as the rush
to opposite camps
widens the chasm
that is breaking us
into us and them
good radicalism vs bad
the long arm of the law
applied only to non-loyalists
and our nation’s leader
fomenting hate
for non-cult members
on faux news…
they got him
for the senseless death
of yet another victim
in the growing number
of those who have become
martyrs to a culture
of unregulated militias
a legacy left to survivors
to sort out if they hope
to have a future
I used to hope
for the future
now I’m good
if I live to see
another day
that is enough
even if it’s not

I have been struggling this week. No one…no one should die an untimely death at the hands of an assassin with a gun. Not Charlie, not Fletcher and Harper, not Melissa and Mark and their beloved dog Gilbert, to name those recently added to the list of casualties from gun violence in this country. It is heartbreaking.

But what is even more disturbing is the way that these events are dividing us. There is an all or nothing test being applied in this most recent tragedy. People of all persuasions are being pressured to join the posthumous edification of this person, who in life wanted LGBTQ people executed, stated that people of color were inferior, that women should not be allowed to vote, or have autonomy over their own body, and most deplorable, that a few deaths a year from gun violence was a “fair deal” to ensure 2nd amendment rights for all people over the age of 18. No flags at half staff for children gunned down, no medals of freedom proposed for congress members who are not maga, who were gunned down in their homes. But for this guy, because he helped win DT an election, and was friends with JR and JD, we should all come together in unity to honor his life. I feel terrible for his family, his wife and young kids, but I can’t, I won’t feed the narrative that he was a great patriot and a hero. He was not.

So this where we are. Gone are the days when we could be civil with each other, listen, and debate, and even learn from each other. There is only one approved way to be and believe these days. And if you‘re not on board, you’re out, the enemy, evil…I’ll spare you all the descriptors.

If I am an enemy, then may I be opposed to hate, to cruelty, to misogyny, to racism, to dictatorships, to white supremacy, to monsters who prey on women and girls, to liars, grifters, and pro birthers who don’t give a damn for children once they are born. There is more, but I’m weary of this coup. And we’re it even a full year into this nightmare.

I started the year with the intention of sharing glimmers with you every day. While I was writing this…I was visited by a pair of deer…and a few hummingbirds too (though they were too fast for me to catch a snapshot)! Nature and life moments never fail me.

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

day 246

Afternoon sun refracted/reflected through the neon tetra fish tank onto the laundry closet doors. Late summer 2025 ~kat

not a hoax

innocent girls trapped in women’s bodies
now stand bravely in the face of power
speaking truth, hoping to be seen
after years of invisibility, years…
we’re taught to trust, to respect
our elders, to serve, to obey but
no one taught us how to respond
to elders who turned into monsters

~kat

I watched the press conference yesterday…you know the one…the one featuring the women seeking justice for the crimes they suffered as young girls at the hands of the rich and famous. They stand for every woman who has ever been abused. Me too came and went. But these women and their supporters are not going away. We need to support them and uphold their right to seek justice. May they finally be heard, and may they finally receive the justice withheld from them by the rich and powerful. Even as they poured their hearts out on the grounds near the capitol building, Trump doubled down on his latest catch phrase. “It’s a hoax!” No donald…it is not a hoax.

much love, peace, and glimmers to you,

day 245

more vacation memories

it took a north-flowing river
a campfire, a bottle of Yuengling,
from America’s oldest brewery,
and stories of hogs, sunflower gardens,
pepper relish recipes, and great dane
kisses, to help me breathe, in deeply
out slowly with a sigh underneath
a perfect blue cloud brushed sky

~kat

There is something special about a riverside campfire. The easy flow of the water, waterfowl riding the current, good food, great company, and cool crisp air…lots of it…that has a way of healing the heart and soul. I didn’t even realize that I needed a sit by the river until it happened. It was the last day of a perfect time away. I am not entirely back into my pre-trip routine. And that’s okay. Sometimes you just need to pause a spell to take it all in.

much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

day 244

stoned

there is love
hearts chiseled from stone
crying out
for justice for peace
yes, even the rocks

~kat

It’s been a short long week. While I have been writing and collecting glimmers along the way, I am only now catching my breath. Today’s glimmer is a glimpse of the heart shaped treasures I found on my walks with Gabby. It was quite a productive few days. Everywhere I looked there were heart-shaped stones. Amidst rousing conversations on the state of the world over dinner, I returned to our hotel and grounded myself in gravel plant beds. So many things about this trip were healing. Today’s theme and glimmers are the rocks that begged me to notice them…and bring them home with me.

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

day 243 – been traveling

glimmers from the Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania, US
the long way home

I took the long way home
through memories vivid
as the restored façades
of centuries old buildings,
stories of family and friends,
of places that have long been
razed to pave the way
for shopping centers and parking lots
but as the roads narrowed
the country I love still stands
along winding freight rail tracks
and rivers, just off the highway
in valley hollows and on mountaintops,
flags flying high at local post offices
Main Street centers with gazebos,
diners and soft serve drive ins,
corn and soybean fields and cows
feasting on sweet grass and clover
it was a long and winding road
through the Allegheny countryside,
the Shenandoah highlands,
and finally the Blue Ridge
I’m filled to the brim with new memories
grateful to be home where my heart is

~kat

I owe you a few more glimmers and hope to be on track later today as I unpack and settle back in. But for now meet some of the new friends I met during our travels.

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you!
