seventy million, nine hundred sixteen thousand, nine hundred forty-six
sparks of light flicker in a sea of darkness
believers in love, compassion, inclusion,
justice, truth, civility, kindness, peace
we cling to hope as winter closes in

seventy million, nine hundred sixteen thousand, nine hundred forty-six
despite what you may have heard
is proof beyond a shadow’s doubt
that you are in good company,
light bearers shining for all to see

seventy million, nine hundred sixteen thousand, nine hundred forty-six
reasons to grieve, to take time to heal
to cling to the promise of spring…
of a bright dawn after the darkest night
to protect each precious ember of light

seventy million, nine hundred sixteen thousand, nine hundred forty-six
did not a landslide make, nor mandate
for those who choose the ways of hate
may love’s light lead us from the edge
and gather us to forge the path ahead

seventy million, nine hundred sixteen thousand, nine hundred forty-six
hold space for victory in this fight
one day we’ll surely get this right
just not today, true change takes years
so rest your hearts for now, we need you here

the graces

the graces

time and once upon ago
Euphrosyne’s amber tresses flowed
on wisps of autumn’s frosted breath

dear Aglaia, the tall and slim
in elegance, slow danced with wind
cloud-kissed, her raiment golden flecked

and Thalia, sweet Thalia blushed bright
her supple shallow roots held tight
as fledglings flitted from their summer nests

yes time and once upon ago
from seed to sprout these beauties showed
resilience when the tempests raged
they met each season shift with grace
flowered, fruited, shed their seed
the most magnificent of trees
and lovely still, though worn with age
if they could speak what might they say?

embrace each season of this life
dwell on the good, let go the strife
time steals away before you know
so learn to bend when fierce winds blow
let your roots spread deep and wide
reach to heaven’s North Star guide
then soft surrender to the loam
leave not a trace, but grace, come home

heat-waives

heat-waives
a haiku

how weary she looks
parched, fading, lush to chartreuse
wistful for autumn

late summer encounter

late summer encounter

I spied a lovely doe today
she held my gaze, then leapt away
into the brush deep in the hollow
I fought the urge to rush and follow
to think I’m kind would not be safe
we humans are a cruel race
I kept my distance glad to see
her intuition made her flee
run free sweet forest sprite run free
it’s best to fear the likes of me
as hunters plan their autumn sacks
be swift, stay safe, and don’t look back

the rain is enough for now

the rain is enough for now

elevator music is little consolation,
mindless games on my smartphone,
a favorite song, full blast,
channel surfing, tik tok scrolling,
chocolate, hot tea, happy thoughts,
positive thinking is futile, powerless
when the unknown looms just beyond
my reach, and the answers I seek
demand patience that is wearing thin…
thinner still, the veil, drifting into view
brushing my shoulders, caressing me
in the excruciating silence of waiting
waiting is a merciless exercise
where I find myself counting each breath,
inhaling deeply, filling to the brim,
exhaling slowly, settling into my skin,
to think I try to find solace in these things,
to muster silly defenses
against the terribleness of unknowing
when all I really need is to feel,
to experience the moment, the now
to hear the rain dancing on the roof
to realize it’s enough
and all I need to know
