No one suspected that something so conspicuously displayed had the potential to raze an entire city. Malcolm placed it right on the mantle. To his guests it looked like a decorative light, with flashing arcs of green and blue and purple.

It was a night to celebrate the landslide election that promised freedom from the oppressive cruelty once wielded by the now deposed regime. Their hero, a visionary, would soon take the reigns and move the city into a bright and hopeful future. Malcolm smiled as he watched his guests enjoying themselves. They deserved to be happy.

He almost forgot about the capsule. It had been his Plan B. Malcolm, you see, despite his charm and fortune, was also slightly mad. If they had lost the election, there was no reason for anyone to live. He would ensure it.

As he glanced at the mantle, the color drained from his face. The capsule was gone! A quick scan of the room revealed his worse nightmare. There on the floor a child sat shaking the cylinder, giggling as it changed colors…green, blue, purple…RED! NOT RED!

Malcolm raced toward the child shouting, “Please! put it …”

What Matters Most

Private hanger?! Chartered flight!? Sandra couldn’t believe Michael had such means. But that didn’t matter to her. Their relationship had begun quite innocently. It started with a common “like” on a friend of a friend’s social media page. For the next year there were chats and phone conversations. A lovely friendship developed, and more. They both felt it.

As Sandra gazed out the window on the approach to the island, her heart skipped a beat. It was not the sight of the lavish estate that touched her so. There, at the end of the runway Michael was waiting.

Purple Haze

Recently, I made the mistake of leaving an open bottle of wine on the table. Soft-hearted sap that I am, I decided not to pen the dogs while I did some last minute Christmas shopping for snow ski’s for my grandson.

As you might imagine I came home to a royal mess, no doubt masterminded by the cat. Fluffy, that’s his name, don’t judge, managed to tip the wine bottle over the edge of the table sending a flow of purple drink into the waiting chops of my pups. (By pups, I am talking about 150 pounds plus of rowdy mastiff energy EACH…but I digress.)

Maxwell and Winston got slightly whizzed and started feverishly spinning the bottle like a toy. The wine that was still in the bottle left lovely impressionistic smatterings on the walls of my parlor as well as giving our Sun Conure, Mr. Bean a lavender makeover.

Of course these clueless blokes had no idea that they had just been duped by the cat, who sat smugly aloft on the mantle watching the whole scene as I entered the house.

I was greeted by Maxwell and Winston’s usual slobbery kisses and machete-like tails bashing my thighs…and the indignant bobbing and squawking of Mr. Bean. I had to smile. It WAS my fault after all.

Back to the store for more wine…for me this time. Dogs penned, everything in its place. I may decide to keep the artwork in my parlor. It’s growing on me. I think I’ll call it “Purple Haze!”

An Intuition for Shopping

image

It was clear to Julia that the piece had been tampered with, but she decided to listen to her intuition. She liked the design and it would look fine on her mantle. After negotiating a fair price for an obvious fake, she paid the street vendor in cash.

As she had imagined, the bowl looked spectacular above her fireplace. She was thrilled to have it in time for her holiday party. No one needed to know it wasn’t the real thing!

The party began with the usual parlaying of pleasantries, but as the alcohol flowed things got a bit rowdy. A fellow who had been dancing lost his footing. He reached for the mantle to catch himself, catching the bowl instead, and they both tumbled to the floor.

Attention quickly shifted from the lad’s wellbeing to the shattered pieces of porcelain and scattering of diamonds near his head. A guest shouted to the kitchen, “Julia, I think you’re gonna want to see this!”

The Box

Steven turned the small box in his pocket as he waited for Miranda. For years they met here sharing dreams and solving world problems. They knew each other as well as anyone could know someone, Steven thought. Today, he would propose to his soulmate.

Miranda plopped in the chair, giddy with excitement. “Could she possibly know?” Steven wondered.

As she waved her left hand toward him, she happily chirped, “I’m engaged Steven…isn’t that wonderful?”

Steven dropped the box to the bottom of his pocket, took her hand and forced a smile. “It’s lovely Miranda…I’m so happy for you…”
