Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 4 August 2019

The sun is shining in my small corner of the world this morning. There’s a cool breeze, birds are singing, people around the neighborhood are stirring, having coffee on front porches, some will head to the churches that populate dozens of corners throughout my town. No doubt those congregants will offer thoughts and prayers for the victims of the last 24 hours, for the 29 departed souls, for the 53 people injured, for the families changed forever. Thoughts and prayers.

I’m sick of this. I’m angry. We the people know what we need to do. Weapons of war need to be removed from our streets and the hallowed arsenals of 2nd amendment zealots. We need sensible gun regulation, background checks, mental health services and transparency in law enforcement. Our forefathers did not envision this when they penned that amendment. But they had the foresight to include a phrase that gets lost in the “right to bear arms” mantra…”a well-regulated militia”. This is the second amendment in full, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

What we have today is anything but regulated. Those in power, who suckle at the teats of the NRA are not interested in the will of the people. And cry as we may in outrage, we are responsible for keeping them in power; for the reign of terror that has assaulted us. We put them in office and keep them there, unchecked, allowing them to reap wealth and prosperity for themselves, the rest of us be damned.

And there is one more thing that bears mentioning. The elephant in the room. It is the caustic hateful rhetoric that spews from the jowls of the president day in day out. He wins when we are divided. He wins when the hate of people of color, the foreigner, lgbtq people, the poor, the sick, so-called liberals, the others, as in anyone not white, boils under our skin turning us against each other. But we can’t let him win. Trump is not the first and only source of this sickness but he is most certainly a symptom of the deep-seeded brokenness of our young nation. He is the epitome of everything that is ugly and hate-filled, selfish and evil and because he holds a position of supreme power, we must hold him accountable. He tweeted his thoughts and prayers for the victims of yesterday’s tragedy. I’m sorry, this is not enough Mr. president. It is meaningless. El Paso’s shooter clearly idolized you and was emboldened by your rhetoric. You alone are responsible for rallying the underbelly of society with every rant and chant of “lock her up”, “send her back”, for every dehumanizing statement you make about black and brown people, trans people, the poor, the educated and informed people who see right through your scam, for anyone who does not “bow to trump”. White terrorists are not “good people” Donald. They are your deadly minions.

I am sick of this. I am angry. I am heartbroken. And I’m feeling helpless and vulnerable right now. 251 mass shootings have occurred in 214 days in 2019 with 1,032 people being shot. Of those people, 180 have died. We are past asking, “what will it take” and “how many more”. Talk gets us nowhere. Talk gets us more terror tomorrow and the next day and the next.

Tell those you love that you love them. Tell them and show them every chance you get this week. None of us is guaranteed tomorrow. So let’s be kind to each other. Life is short. Peace out.

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 4 August 2019

we forget love fashioned us
armed with poison secrets
soul devouring ecstasy
sizzling on sand bars like toast
soaking me down to the skin…
face gone dark this black moon night
let’s get real, because it’s true, life is too short
the coo of a lone dove, mourning,
please don’t despair, in this dark time kindness is free

A ReVerse poem is a summary poem with a single line lifted from each entry of a collection of work over a particular timeframe and re-penned in chronological order as a new poem. Unlike a collaborative poem, the ReVerse features the words of one writer, providing a glimpse into their thoughts over time. I use it as a review of the previous week.

Kimo Days 20-21

I took a long weekend road trip (Friday off from work) to reconnect with two dear friends. It had been decades since we three were all together. We live hundreds of miles from each other but we have stayed in touch, thanks, in part, to social media. We rented a small apartment and had tickets for a play, starring the daughter of the youngest of us.

Of course, the weekend was too short. We promised not to let decades pass before connecting in person again. short as it was, every moment was a comfortable reminder of why our friendship has lasted all these years.

So I’m catching things up here tonight, warmed in the afterglow of a too short weekend that was perfect in every way…grateful that I happened to meet these two girls decades ago. We are silly together…we can all just be when we’re together, and that is a rare gift.

there’s never enough time, never enough
weekends crammed with things to do
a work-life balance ruse

but sometimes…sometimes…the chores go undone
we remember why and who
the most important things

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 14 July 2019

So, I don’t know about you, but I am already weary of the US election process. Dozens of candidates, center to left to far left ad nauseam. What I’d really like to see is the people who are already in the hallowed, hollowed halls of Congress do their job. It’s frustrating. So I’m taking a break. Let me know when it’s down to one candidate. Anyone will be better than what we’ve got right now. And I promise to vote for them, whoever they are.

What is obscene is the amount of money we are pouring into the primaries. When our schools and teachers are underfunded and underpaid; when there are children being held in cages at our border, denied even the most basic of needs, soap, water, dignity; when pharmaceutical companies are making record profits and the elderly and sickest among us are forced to choose between life and survival…It makes me sick to hear about millions of dollars raised here and there, and to receive appeals in my email inbox for just one more dollar…just a dollar to get said candidate on the next debate roster.

So yes, I don’t know about you, but I am over it already. It’s summer after all. I’m taking time out to smell a few roses, to catch sea breezes in my hair, to burrow my toes in the warm sand, to savor the dawn and linger under the trees at dusk considering the blessings of life. I still care about the world at large, I will always care, but for now, for now, there are raindrops and songbirds calling my name.

Have a wonderful week!

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 14 July 2019

keep to yourself, if you please,
i don’t care who is gaining
if you want call it that…
there is no urgency
the sun’s shining, all is well,
come, let’s swim in the rain
the rain pitapatting
i shall never grow weary of the green

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 7 July 2019

So…I’ve been on holiday. This week’s ReVerse spans the past two weeks. Tomorrow, it is back to routine. Back to waking before dawn, working until dusk, squeezing time for writing into the precious few moments in between. I have learned that I must work well under pressure. Every poem this past week has been a struggle. Apparently my muse has been on holiday as well.

But I can’t be too hard on myself. I made good use of my time. Spent several days at the beach with former high school acquaintances, visited my youngest daughters, grand children and grand pups, kept close vigil on the mama cat and elusive kitten who live under my porch, and took naps. A lot of naps. I realized how exhausted I am. All in all, the perfect break away. I needed it.

I would like to think I’ve learned the value of taking time for myself along the way, instead of cramming my leisure time into a structured, unstructured break, but I know I’ll slog right back into that old familiar rut. With any luck the muse will return to me. I think she knows that is when I need her most!

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 7 July 2019

forgiveness…grace are the only things that save me
dancing in flower beds, flickering sparks of light at night
i imagine a neon sign
she wanted to look “normal”
the sweet scent of roses goes unnoticed
to scale mountains, and sometimes rivers
these days we’re attached to our phones, connected to nobody
be back soon
oh yeah
life infused with bitter and sweet
random words, a spark of inspiration,
oppression at the gate
an eerie shroud of silence chokes the air,
somewhere, someone’s grieving

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 23 June 2019

Well, this week’s ReVerse gave me a chuckle! What a jumble of lines it is. Relationships, nature, a pause to smell the roses, and reality nipping at my heels. I am up to my elbows in messy life …on overload. (It’s going to take patience and persistence to coax black kitty from underneath the neighbor’s porch. There is barely enough clearance for a cat. But at least we know he or she is alive and well.)

Life feels very fragile to me right now. Concern for a someone dear to me going through “stuff” and being unable to help, aside from showing love, concern and support, and reminding them of the truth…not always easy, missing my distant children and grand children, working long hours in what feels like futility. No matter what my team accomplishes, the company wants more and more from us. Sometimes I feel so tired.

And then the sun comes out! And I pause to count my blessings. I have a few, more than a few, in fact. And I am presented with opportunity every day to show kindness, be it to care for rescue kitties, or simply having a ready smile for complete strangers, or an encouraging word. I can let those I love know how I feel, and should every day. It’s the most important thing I can do. What a gift these opportunities are. No matter how dark the state of the world may be, I can choose to let a little light shine.

And in the words of the famous motel spokesperson, radio personality extraordinaire, Tom Bodett, if you feel yourself losing your way, “we’ll leave the light on for you.” Have a great week.

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 23 June 2019

what is a friend if not painfully honest
truth mattered, people cared
When you’re done humiliating me, a little help maybe?
somewhere a lake grows shallow
enter the light
fair weather, clear skies due west
the sun will come out tomorrow…you betcha
scent of cut grass and roses wafting
apparently strays and wildlife have our number!
don’t engage, kat, for god’s sake, just eat your toast
