day 150

the trees know best

a storm
most certainly
is coming
the rushing wind
the darkening skies
the undersides
of tree leaves showing
air thick and wet
growing wetter
grab an umbrella
maybe a sweater
the weather man said
sunny weather
but I have something
even better…nature
always lets me know
and the trees…
they told me so

I am on the mend. As much as I love living in the middle of the woods, I am highly allergic. As am I to cats, I have three. I may even be allergic to laundry though I force myself to do it regularly enough…and even better, to actually fold and put it away. They have medication for all of these things (well maybe not for laundry), which I take so that can tolerate the closeness of these things I love, the trees and cats. And I suppose clothes too, as I am a bit shy when it comes to being naked in public! it’s not a pretty sight I assure you! Consider it my gift to humanity that I keep private what’s meant to be kept!

Tolerance is a willful thing isn’t it? We choose to be tolerant. We make concessions for those things that press us to tolerate them. It worries me that humanity is being pressured more and more to tolerate things that used to be non-negotiable in a civil society. Things like cruelty, lies, hate, lawlessness, bullying, intimidation, bigotry, misogyny…goodness that’s a long list (there is likely more…I know there’s more and much of it not good 😟).

I have made concessions to live peacefully with my dander and pollen laden loves. Tolerance is a choice after all. I need to remind myself that I do not need to tolerate anything that is the opposite of love and that it is perfectly fine for me to say so, even if it’s scary. Maybe my saying it might even help someone else feel a little less afraid to say it too.

anyhow…it’s gonna rain soon. The trees told me so. I love them even if they do make me sneeze!

much love, peace, and glimmers to you. And remember, you get to choose. When given the chance I hope you choose love!

(today’s glimmer? Why, the underside of tree leaves of course. They are dazzling even if it does mean a storm is coming!)

day 148

there’s gonna be weather…

1-
pressure gently drops,
old knees ache before the storm—
barometer groans

2-
barometers drop—
inciting my knees to sing
sadly, out of tune

3-
storm brews in my bones—
barometer dips, aching
echoes through the rain

Haiku Fun with AI (ChatGPT).

As I write today’s glimmer post with poem, I am once again feeling a bit under the changing weather. My sinuses do not like barometric changes in the atmosphere, nor do my joints! So I decided to do a simple haiku on the topic.

And just for fun I asked Chat GPT/AI to write a haiku on the topic: barometers and knee pain. Can you tell me which haiku is AI generated and which is penned by yours truly? 😊

I have to admit AI is an amazing tool. But don’t worry, you won’t find me deferring to AI to write my poetry. It is the creative process that feeds my soul! In case you’re wondering, my haiku is featured in the artwork below.

Much love, peace, and authentic glimmers to you!!!

Did you guess correctly? This was a fun exercise!

day 146

late spring rain

some spring rains
are not warm, dazzling
translucent streams
backlit by the sun
gently quenching fragile
flower petals and shallow roots…

some spring rains
are angry tempests
downpours that drench
the sodden earth and
swell the creek beds with
wind-driven shards bearing
remnants of winter that
graze my skin before
settling deep into my bones…

some might say
the grass gets watered
either way, but there is
something to be said
for kinder, gentler deliveries
even if rain is rain is rain

As you might suspect, today is one of those chilly, rainy days that doesn’t quite know how to act in late spring! To add insult to injury our electricity went out for several hours. I was still able to work using batteries and WiFi hotspots, but a cup of good hot tea was not an option as I tapped away at my keyboard lit only by the gray, muted light streaming through the windows from outside. The lights eventually came back on but my mood by then had dulled. And yet, I found myself pausing at day’s end…feeling grateful that I was still able to work, that I had a roof over my head, that the lights came back on earlier than forecasted. I warmed myself some soup before sitting down to write.

It’s true rain is rain…even the bone-chilling kind. And as I sipped that savory liquid from my cup I was reminded warmth comes from within as the soup settled in my stomach then radiated out. I took a deep breath and smiled… and just like I realized that today’s glimmer appeared after all!

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

day 145

Memorial

the skies today
are overcast gray
the Stars and Stripes
are on display
reminding us
when freedom calls
there is a price
some gave their all
we honor them
the few, the brave
they died believing
to the grave
a righteous cause
worth dying for
a melting pot,
from shore to shore
with opportunities
for all who come
with hopeful hearts
with dreams of more
may all of us
the living still
ensure their death
was not in vain
give voice to truth
defend democracy
in memory, proclaim
Let freedom reign!

It’s Memorial Day here in the US today. A day to remember our fallen soldiers, those who died on battlefields at home and abroad. The president did his obligatory photo shot, laying a wreath at the grave of the Unknown soldier at Arlington Cemetery, but this selfish man couldn’t be bothered to pay his respects to the troops on site for the event. He rushed off to “deal with China” he said. In actually it was tee-time at his nearby golf course that demanded his attention. We can do better America. We need to do better. Today of all days it is the least we can do for our heroes who gave all.

My glimmer today? I cleaned closets. It’s a good feeling to get rid of things that no longer serve your needs. There’s a wider lesson to be gleaned from this I think. I’ll just leave this here for you to chew on if it resonates with you.

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you!

day 143

moon daisies in the middle of nowhere

when
life
feels
chaotic
simple moon daisies
glimmer in ordered perfection

~kat

Yesterday…last week in general, was a particularly horrible week in the slow death of the US democracy. I am still trying to wrap my brain around all that happened recently, while trying to remember all the atrocities of previous weeks. We cannot let the magnitude of each new news cycle’s horribleness lead us to forget the past cries for justice. Sovereign nations are still being ravaged by aggressors, the disappeared amongst us are still missing, tariffs are destroying trade and world economies, women are still suffering and dying due to blocked access to healthcare, poor children are hungry, some dying, immigrant children are still being separated from their families, vulnerable populations are becoming invisible, history is being hidden and rewritten…all while cruelty is celebrated and the filthy rich are getting richer. I know it’s exhausting. I feel it in my bones as I imagine many of you do. But, we are many voices and while we may not be able to advocate for every single one of these issues we can choose one or maybe two that resonates deeply with our own heart and soul to pursue justice from our spineless government officials. Maybe if we are loud enough our voices will overcome the toxic bullying from the top and help them see that bowing to him only leads to more cruelty and destruction. One can hope.

On my morning walk I noticed a tiny glimmer in the distance. As I got closer I realized it was a pair of wild daisies blooming in the middle of nowhere. Just two. Perfectly formed. Upon closer inspection I felt immediate calm in my troubled heart as I gazed at the flowers’ center blossoms, tucked in tightly in a Fibonacci spiral. Nature always brings me back to my senses and reminds me that underneath all the chaos, there is still beautiful order to keep us. We just need to allow our troubled minds to see it. And so this morning I did. I will carry this picture in my mind today to help me breath when the world gets too ugly to bear.

Much love, peace, and glimmers to you. If you can’t seem to find your own, I am happy to mine with you🌻✨✨💚💚✨✨🌻

And of course the poem form for today had to be the Fib! A Fib poem is ‘a six line, 20 syllable poem with a syllable count by line of 1/1/2/3/5/8 – the classic Fibonacci sequence.’ (You can also write a Fib poem using word count in sequence.)
