The Serbian word “Merak” is a feeling of bliss and the sense of oneness with the universe that comes from the simplest of pleasures. It is the pursuit of small, daily pleasures that all add up to a great sense of happiness and fulfillment.

For the Daily Terza Rima Stanza Challenge. As fortune would have it, while on a walk, I happened upon this young cicada fresh from its exuviae, having shed its former self. I think about how any layers I have shed over the years, and feel an affinity with the cicadas who sing with such intensity and verve.

I’ve never seen one newly “hatched” before, wings still electric green, eyes black as coal. I usually encounter the elders with gray-black wings and hot red eyes. The older ones are much more frightening, especially when they’ve managed to get tangled in your hair…<-true story. 😳

We don’t get many of them here. Not like the Mediterranean. When just one or two are singing it’s not the same.
