Losing Hope

How easily hope drifts away
When we forget to let things be
In our attempts to have our way
We only trust in what we see.

Surrender serves our spirit best.
How easily hope slips away
Each time our faith’s put to the test
And fear demands the final say.

For no amount of power play
Will ultimately bring us peace
How easily hope slips away
To know our strength we must be weak.

Religiosity’s a trap,
Faux piety can lead astray
We learn to dwell on what we lack
How easily hope slips away!

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 20 March 2016

Happy Sunday! And it is a happy…Sunday. But a look at this week’s ReVerse one might suggest that things had taken a turn. Well…they did.

I blame it on the time change. It’s not healthy you know. Saving Daylight? As if daylight needed saving!

Last time I checked Nature had everything running smoothly. Seasons come and go with only a few hiccups, those random, off-season cool snaps and heat waves, that stir our senses in the transition. The sun rises and sets each day without a hitch. Who are we to prescribe it’s coming and going  on a schedule to our liking?

Well, for the record, I don’t like it. And back when it was first proposed as a national energy conserving tactic neither did the farmers. One should not mess with Mother Nature. She does a splendid job of lengthening our days in the warmer seasons if we are patient. We are not.

Daylight Saving is unnatural. Ask any toddler who is sent to bed at their prescribed 8 or 9 pm bedtime in the middle of summer, or better yet, ask the weary parents who must try to convince them to settle down at “night” when the sun is still shining!

I must admit that I have been lulled into acceptance this past week. Leaving my cubicle to beautiful sunlight has been wonderful. But it is a guilty pleasure! I know I am only enjoying it because we are cheating the moon and night of their full measure. Lovely night, with its promise of rest and regeneration, does not deserve our contempt.

And so yes, things are a bit out of whack. Subliminally, the words that spilled out this week are trying to tell me to fall back, to accept Nature’s perfect timing and perfection. We humans are not good at leaving well enough alone!

Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 20 March 2016

shifting my circadian bleeps
catchy talking points,
not a “joker” smile
always have a plan
as if things matter
I was beginning to think
like being cooked in a microwave oven…
from the inside out!
she wished she had said, “no”
no wonder we turn our stereos to “11”
but eventually they died,
never much liked that mutt,
we all build nests to feel safe
defying the years
can’t get there from here!

If you’re new here, a bit of background to explain the verse above. It is a line from each poem or prose from the previous week, lifted and placed in the order written to create a new poem…a ReVerse snapshot review of the week. It helps me to prepare for the upcoming week with a clean slate.

To The Left

Utter frustration!
“Left Only” inclinations…
Can’t get there from here!

Amaranthine ~ Friday’s Word of the Day Haiku

Happy Friday! Today’s Word of the Day from Dictionary.com is a beautiful, romantic word…Amaranthine. It’s meaning captures the imagination.

The origin of the word according to Dictionary.com states:

Amaranthine comes from the Greekword amáranton meaning “unfadingflower,” formed from the Greekmaraínein, “to fade” and ánthos, “flower.” It entered English in the mid-1600s.

For centuries man has sought some magical elixir that would restore youth and turn back time. Some believed there was an actual fountain of youth on a mysterious tropical island waiting to be discovered! It is the legendary Island of Bimini, to be exact, that Ponce de Leon devoted his later life to finding in order to restore his own youthfulness.

These days the quest continues. Every bottle of face cream or serum, Botox, hair dye, smoothie power boosters, herbs, vitamins, flower essences, exercise, water therapy, energy treatments…have I left anything off the list? No doubt, there is more…or if not coming soon to an infomercial near you!

But I admit, I’m a believer. Well, sort of. I believe that the fountain of youth exists deep inside each of us, revealing itself in the twinkle of an eye! You’ve seen it haven’t you? I know I have!

Have a great weekend! Here’s my Haiku…

Defying the years
An amaranthine grace glowed
From her twinkling eyes.

Nesting – A Monotetra

Paper scraps, moss and bits of twine
Feathers, leaves, wisteria vines
A compost cup of mud and slime
Where nestlings dine, where nestlings dine.

Bumper pads, diapers, teddy bears
Bassinets, booties, rocking chairs
Gathered in wait for future heirs
A mom prepares, a mom prepares.

Books, newspapers and magazines
Pizza boxes from floor to beams
Collectibles to the extreme
A hoarder’s dream, a hoarder’s dream.

Tattered blankets and cardboard bed
collected things others have shed
A duffle bag to rest one’s head
a homeless-stead, a homeless-stead.

A bit of twine, a cardboard base
Bassinets, booties, books to case
We all build nests to feel safe
We need our space, we need our space.
