Terza Rima 1-Finit – Heat Wave

after the night’s tempests, temps fall below
boiling point, cool breezes caress the trees
swooning seas of green, undulating slow

blissful air, cool, crisp, no humidity
prisoners of shade, at long last, set free

The final installment of this first week of July’s daily poem challenge with Jane Dougherty…to write a Terza Rima stanza per day. I’m doing a weekly summation rather than a 30 day epic. The Heat Wave series in whole, below:

Heat Wave

no cool breezes today to temper the heat
waves rising from pavement, hot, smelling of oil
with hints of green, wilting, birds fluttering, tweet

no squirrels scampering; too hot to toil
in sweltering shaded hollows, creatures keep
nighttime’s a blessing, cool, but sleep is spoiled

darkness hovers, raging clouds swell and sweep
low, just over the treetops, growling gloom
rush of rain drops plopping, puddles deep

dark hollows erupt in wild mushrooms
creatures, nocturnal, creep, burrowing low
stale air swirls in darkening rooms

longing for rain is quite futile, you know
this heatwave continues, no end in sight
seconds to minutes the hours tic slow

another scorching day, hazy and bright
cold front a-brewing, thunder rumbling low
sun’s reign of rage, by rain will lose this fight

after the night’s tempests, temps fall below
boiling point, cool breezes caress the trees
swooning seas of green, undulating slow

blissful air, cool, crisp, no humidity
prisoners of shade, at long last set free

This is the sixth Terza Rima stanza in a series of daily entries for July’s micropoetry challenge prompted by Jane Dougherty. I’m thinking I’ll wrap this series on day 7 to give us all some much needed relief from this heat waverie (yes I just made up a word…I must be delirious!). Fortunately my inspiration, the weather, will be doing the same, with cooler temperatures promised this weekend. Then on to a new topic. 💚

Mr. Toad – Daily Lune #4

A Lune in response to Jane Dougherty’s Daily Short-form Poetry Challenge. I discovered this brave fellow in the dig run. Fortunately he’s a shapeshifter, my mutts none-the-wiser. 😊

Daily Lune #3

night falls intensely
in the woods
whispering stillness

Daily Lune #3 inspired by Jane Dougherty’s daily short-form Poetry Challenge. And so out first full day of vacation commences. Last night outside our little lake cabin in the woods I was stunned by the stillness. This is going to be a good week. 😊

For June…a Lune! I had suggested a Lune to Jane Dougherty for our daily short form poetry challenge. The Lune is a three line poem, either 5/3/5 syllables or 3/5/3 words. Jane went for the word form today. I opted for the syllable style. Please join us! I like the idea of a short poem written daily.
