courage

courage

courage
is a child
who goes
back to school
after a massacre

courage
is telling
the truth
even if it means
losing everything

courage
is wearing
a dress because
it makes you feel pretty
even if they named you Jonathan

courage
is helping those
who are different
because what matters most
is acknowledging their humanity

courage
Is not laughing
when the joke
is not funny
but hurtful to someone

courage
is saying,
“me too”
“Black Lives Matter”
“I stand with you”

courage
I have learned
evolved from
the Latin word, ‘cor’
meaning heart

courage
is following
one’s heart
showing the rest of us
how to truly live

A Tragedy

I don’t know how I did this, but I linked to LAST week’s prompt! Time is standing still for so many of us, isn’t it? I can sense our collective gasp as we watch our government heartlessly try to unravel any forward movement in the gun debate – which should not be a debate. I still believe this time is different. The children give me hope.

Maybe I was meant to revisit last week’s prompt. Though I know…I owe you another poem Colleen. For now, there is this…

A Tragedy

no courage in the
hallowed halls of congress,
in their attachment
to power and lobbyists
they entrench death into law

but for the passion,
the rage of our brave children,
all honor is slain

rising from
the muddle of
buried truths,
voices no longer
silenced by
tarnished
pennies, seeking
vindication, seeking
validation, vilified
unjustly, but
free to speak
in bellowing
whispers, a
symphony of
tears…
