Gold ‘n Crane Haiku

Ronovan’s Haiku Challenge this week presented the words, “Gold” and “Crane”, and as he often does, encouraged us to check our thesaurus out for these multifaceted gems. Naturally, once I found myself in synonym heaven, it was impossible to write just one Haiku…so I give you three. If you’d like to read more or join the challenge click HERE.

crane

More precious than pure gold
Fold one thousand paper cranes
Healing dreams come true.

Cauldrons of apples
golden delicious butter
suspended on cranes.

She was a rude oaf
craning her neck, eavesdropping
hoarding lies, like gold.

Reflections on a Street Lamp in the Rain

streetlamp

Through rain droplets
ambient lamp light glows warm
love is in the air.

Street
lamps shine
dreamlike through
fat rain droplets
guiding me
safely
home

I hardly noticed
it was raining that evening
when I saw you there
waiting under the lamp light…
like moth to flame, besotted.

(Haiku~Sept~Tanka)

A Haiku is a 3 line poem/syllables: 5-7-5; a Sept is a 7 line poem/syllables 1-2-3-4-3-2-1; and a Tanka is a 5-line poem/syllables: 5-7-5-7-7. I discovered this triune format through a poetry challenge and love the flow of it. J

Steam Haiku

To sputter and hiss,
To spout steam like a kettle
Dial up the heat!

Like a whistling pot
She kept her feelings hidden
Until she was steamed!

“Just blowing off steam…”
Justifies their behavior
‘Til someone gets hurt.

Kat’s Vegan Chili

I love chili, but since I stopped eating meat I hadn’t found a recipe online that I liked. They all added extra veggies that I’m not used to having in chili. Things like sweet potatoes, zucchini, carrots, corn…even avocado. I’m sure these are all good if you want a tomato-based veggie stew, but they would likely fall short when what I am craving is chili!

So I tweaked the ingredients, borrowed a few from here and a few from there, and came up with my own recipe. It’s extra spicy and the quinoa is a perfect substitute for “meat”.

One never knows how these kitchen adventures will end up, but I am delighted to report that I have a keeper here. Throw in a side of cornbread and it’s the perfect comfort dish for a chilly Sunday afternoon!

You will need a cutting board and knife. Measuring cup and tablespoon. A stew-sized pot and a medium saucepan with lids.

First:
Prepare 2 cups of cooked quinoa (1 cup quinoa to 2 cups water)

Next Step:
1 large onion diced
5 cloves garlic chopped
Tbs olive oil
Carmelize onions and garlic while quinoa is cooking.

Then add:
1 12 oz can tomato paste
1 can rotel
1 can of tomato sauce
1 can diced tomatoes
2 cups veggie broth

Next add a bit of heat!
2 tbs chili powder
1 tbs Sriracha sauce
1 tbs crushed red pepper
1 tbs salt
1 tbs cocoa powder

Add 4 cans of beans ( your choice – I like a tri-bean blend but you could use kidney or black bean)
And add the quinoa.

Simmer for at least 30 minutes on low heat, stirring often to keep the quinoa from sticking on the bottom.

Enjoy!

Lady of the Woods ~ A Haiku Trio

I received a request from my friend Lynn, a fellow blogger of the site, “LynzRealCooking“, to write a Haiku inspired by an incredible photo she took while on a walk at a nearby arboretum.

You should visit her blog. As its title suggests, you will find a variety of wonderful recipes that she has perfected over the years while raising her 9 children. But an added bonus and the heart of her blog are the compelling stories she shares from her life as a young mother raising children in the middle sat. Click HERE to visit Lynn’s blog.

I wrote a trio of Haiku inspired by Lynn’s tree photo. If you look closely at the tree on the right, I hope you’ll see “her”.

Fragile limbs exposed await
Rebirth in the Spring.

Rebirth in the Spring
Reveals a resilience
Surging from her core…

Surging from her core
Audacious perseverance
Weath’ring every storm.
