Having weathered first frost
A single rose droops full bloom
Petals precariously hanging
Nearby green leaves, dew hanging
drip warm from morning frost,
rousing dormant buds to bloom
But it will be too soon to bloom
summer’s last remnant hanging
will suffer winter’s brutal frost
How bittersweet when autumn’s frost lapses warm to taunt the rose to bloom with Winter set to snatch the fading petals left there hanging.

This poem is a Tritina in response to Jane Dougherty’s Poetry Challenge # 10. I am a day late in entering. The holidays and work have left me little time to write, but I so wanted to give this poem style a try. I chose the three words: Frost – Bloom – Hanging (inspired by the climbing rose bush in my front yard…roses are a faithful muse for me.)
