days 190 – 191

the veil

we are just a breath away
the veil skims against our skin
a cardinal sings nearby as if to say
we are just a breath away
when it’s our time we’ll fight to stay
make the most of life ‘til then
we are just a breath away
the veil skims against our skin

seeing beauty

there is beauty all around
everywhere our eyes can see
wondrous signs of life and sounds
there is beauty all around
glimmers waiting to be found
sunlight shimmering through trees
there is beauty all around
everywhere our eyes can see

We had another visitor to these woods. I’m thinking now that it wasn’t the full moon, but a mammal large enough to bend iron…very much like the last time, that had all the turkeys and birds and squirrels, and deer all freaked out. Both bird feeding stations were decimated, seed scattered on the ground. Some have speculated that it was a black bear. Not uncommon for this region. Typically though, they stay clear of populated areas.

I walked the property to see if I could find any prints or other markers to assess the species of our inhospitable guest, but the ground was too dry from the heat wave we’ve been having. As I rounded the corner I saw a tiny house wren fledgling perched on the edge of a water bowl. It hopped down but appeared to be injured. Fell out of a nest perhaps. I managed to scoop it up safely in a box and we took it to the wildlife rehab center.

On the way back home we found ourselves stranded in stopped traffic. Just ahead emergency crews were rescuing accident victims and tow vehicles loading what was left of the crushed vehicles that appeared to have collided head on at a curve in the road. We hope the victims all recover.

We never know when we wake up each morning whether that new day will be our last. It’s a sobering reminder to make the most of every moment that we are still living and breathing, and to be kind when opportunities invite us to intercede on behalf of another living soul. None of us are promised tomorrow.

Much love, peace and glimmers to you. I hope to see you tomorrow!
