etiquette when death comes to call
never send
cut flowers
to the grieving
eventually
they wilt
wither
and die
a dismal reminder
of their beloved
departed
it’s a cruel
thing to do
don’t you see
but if you must send
something green
a lovely potted plant
filled with buds
on the cusp
of blooming
or a tree
one that’s
hearty and strong
a tribute
a celebration of life
a reminder
that life goes on

Na/GloPoWriMo2022 Day 23 Prompt: write a poem in the style of Kay Ryan, whose poems tend to be short and snappy – with a lot of rhyme and soundplay. They also have a deceptive simplicity about them, like proverbs or aphorisms.

I always think it is a huge waste when public shrines are created with flowers, candles, and cuddly toys when a celebrity or small child dies, or a major disaster occurs. So much more benefit could be achieved with charity donations or practical offers of help. I do, however, understand the individual acts.

Nicely done, by the way Kat!

I agree Peter. I feel much the same way about political campaigns and the millions spent by candidates so they can hawk their embellished “truths” to a gullible electorate. Show me a candidate who uses their war chest to feed the hungry or provide shelter for the homeless and they will have my vote!

How wise. A living plant makes an appropriate gift.

Absolutely. At least it is a practice I have followed for years. ❤️

Thank you Willow. I’m still processing all the loss of late. Writing has certainly been cathartic. ❤️
