they are afraid
truth cannot penetrate their hearts
they are afraid
placing their faith in barricades
setting themselves above, apart
consumed by hate, lost in the dark…

I like rhythm and energy of the form, though I think past tense weakens the message by giving a false sense of security — a danger gone. Like a wishful future looking back. Did you consider present tense for lines 1, 2, 3, and 7? Might there be more power in it?
