the elephants

the elephants

it’s hard to ignore the elephants
they’re showing up everywhere these days
it’s hard to ignore the elephants
proponents of fear, malevolence
be cautious friends, what you do and say
they’re watching you, in a creepy way
it’s hard to ignore the elephants

it’s hard to ignore the elephants
they live next door, you’re never alone
it’s hard to ignore the elephants
they know what you choose and where you spend
they’re following you, they’re in your phone
nowhere is safe, not even home
it’s hard to ignore the elephants

it’s hard to ignore the elephants
who judge and convict with full rancor
it’s hard to ignore the elephants
so beware if you are different,
female, vulnerable, foreigner
it’s coming soon, their vindictive purge
it’s hard to ignore the elephants

Still processing…still coming to terms with what and who this country is. And trying to figure out as a gay, senior, female citizen, how to survive the coming years, with promised threats from the new leaders coming in who are against my very existence and ability to survive. I used to think being kind, living under the radar, minding my own business and not making waves would be enough to live a good life, to be safe. I am having a hard time believing that now. The winners in our recent election are emboldened and meaner than ever. And they’ve got an agenda that promises to make life a living hell for the marginalized, immigrants, refugees, lgbtq+ folk, women, non-radical evangelicals, progressives in general, law-abiding truth tellers, the elderly, the poor, and middle class. It feels like a nightmare and I’m trying to fight the urge to shut down and go into hiding. I’m tryin to find the courage to step out and join others in the fight, but I’ve got to admit, I’m tired folks. Why can’t we all just live and let live and mind our own damn business. The reality…this reality sucks. Which is why I’m putting this out here. Sharing my truth with whoever takes the time or is interested is reading it. And if you’re still here, peace to you. I’m a survivor…and I’ve got a little light still. We’ll get through this. It just sucks that we have to fight to do it.

Peace, hope, light, and love y’all.

Election Reflection

it’s not like words will change our minds
we’re wasting time
sharing more thoughts
our soul’s are bought

so as this fight comes to an end
to all lost friends
fanatical
collateral

let’s hope we can bridge the divide
once we decide
t’would be a sin
to let hate win

The Election

No one suspected that something so conspicuously displayed had the potential to raze an entire city. Malcolm placed it right on the mantle. To his guests it looked like a decorative light, with flashing arcs of green and blue and purple.

It was a night to celebrate the landslide election that promised freedom from the oppressive cruelty once wielded by the now deposed regime. Their hero, a visionary, would soon take the reigns and move the city into a bright and hopeful future. Malcolm smiled as he watched his guests enjoying themselves. They deserved to be happy.

He almost forgot about the capsule. It had been his Plan B. Malcolm, you see, despite his charm and fortune, was also slightly mad. If they had lost the election, there was no reason for anyone to live. He would ensure it.

As he glanced at the mantle, the color drained from his face. The capsule was gone! A quick scan of the room revealed his worse nightmare. There on the floor a child sat shaking the cylinder, giggling as it changed colors…green, blue, purple…RED! NOT RED!

Malcolm raced toward the child shouting, “Please! put it …”
