Spinning Cups

While scrolling through social media, Lucy stopped suddenly.

“Do you recognize this photo?” the text said.

“I do!” she thought, “those are the Spinning Cups at Lakeview Amusement Park. I wonder if it’s still there?”

She expanded the photo. “That’s me and…” she glanced at the profile picture, “and that’s my cousin Sue! Wow! How many years has it been?”

Lucy read the post, “My name is Sue Miller. I’m looking for my cousin, Lucy. Please share.”

Lucy messaged her right away.

She spent the next week catching up, making up for lost time, until time ran out for Sue.

Warming

“Sarah, we need to talk.”

“I know,” Sarah lamented, “I know what you’re going to say.”

“We just can’t afford to keep the shop open any longer. With the winters warming, no one is buying wool hats.”

“I know. You’re right. We can’t afford this storefront any longer, but maybe we could try eCommerce. I hear that some of the Nordic regions still have a season of frosting.”

“We could try that. I’ll set up the website and settle our lease with the landlord to the end of the month.”

“Thanks Josh. I miss winter.”

“Me too, Sarah. Me too.”

Full Moon on Elm Street

“That’s not just a street lamp you know.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, I read in ‘The Daily’ that the government is now installing surveillance cameras.”

“Oh yeah? Hmmm. Maybe we should give ‘em something to look at!”

“Um…uh…what are you DOING?!”

“What I said…” he guffawed as he dropped his jeans, flashing his rear toward the street lamp.”

In a sterile office downtown…

“Got another full moon at the corner of Elm and Main.”

“Do we need to send a squad car?”

“Naw, this dude’s harmless. This makes 10 moonings on Elm this week!”

“Homeland security at work!”

Obscurity

Maude had always kept to herself. Her isolation increased even more after she retired. With no family or friends, and the internet and home shopping network at her disposal, she never needed to leave the comfort of her home, even for the most basic necessities.

After she passed, it was weeks before anyone noticed the odor emanating from her apartment. The authorities were called, she was cremated according to her prearranged wishes and that was that.

Maude was quickly forgotten, except for the army of online vendors who filled her mailbox daily with “We miss you! Come Back!” post cards.

Finer Things

Madge was a hoarder. Not the type of hoarder that boosts the ratings of reality TV, but as she’d declare, “Darling, I am a collector of fine things.”

After she passed, Sarah, her youngest daughter, drew the short straw that decided who would tackle the task of sorting through ‘mom’s junk’.

“Have fun Sarah-Bear,” they taunted as they left.

It wasn’t long before Sarah discovered a treasure trove of family memorabilia: hand-made cards, baby teeth, locks of hair, photographs. Unable to part with any of it, Sarah loaded her car.

Apparently, collecting fine things runs in the family.
