The Sea ~ A Haiku

seawaves

The draw of the sea
beckons us, its salty swells
like tender kisses.

Last Haiku of 2015 for TJ’s Household Haiku Challenge. I only discovered this wonderful challenge recently and I have also enjoyed reading TJ’s other works as well. The prompt for this week’s Haiku: Attraction. When I think of this word, I am drawn immediately to the sea. Thanks TJ for another inspiring challenge. Looking forward to next year! The Pod

The folks of Gold Plains are a peculiar bunch. They have managed to avoid the notoriety attributed to more famous spots like Roswell, Area 51 and Mount Rainier, while carrying on an oral tradition of the first sighting and the “visitors”.

Of particular note, if you happen to be traveling through Gold Plains, is the odd looking tower situated prominently in the downtown square. If you ask a local about it, you’ll get a grin and a nod, but no real explanation. The base of the tower is simply inscribed, “The First Pod – September 1945”.

I visited Gold Plains quite by accident a year ago when my car broke down. Everyone was very pleasant and helpful, but I couldn’t help feeling like an outsider.

It’s strange. Since my visit, I have been having odd dreams and feel compelled to return. That, and the odd mark on the back of my neck. At first I thought it was an insect bite. Now, I’m not so sure…

Frost~Bloom~Hanging…a Tritina

rose

Having weathered first frost
A single rose droops full bloom
Petals precariously hanging

Nearby green leaves, dew hanging
drip warm from morning frost,
rousing dormant buds to bloom

But it will be too soon to bloom
summer’s last remnant hanging
will suffer winter’s brutal frost

How bittersweet when autumn’s frost lapses warm to taunt the rose to bloom with Winter set to snatch the fading petals left there hanging.

This poem is a Tritina in response to Jane Dougherty’s Poetry Challenge # 10. I am a day late in entering. The holidays and work have left me little time to write, but I so wanted to give this poem style a try. I chose the three words: Frost – Bloom – Hanging (inspired by the climbing rose bush in my front yard…roses are a faithful muse for me.) If you would like to read the other Tritinas you may hop over to Jane’s page by clicking HERE.

The Un-Resolution

noresolutions

You may resolve each year to live a life of much less stress
of all the resolutions you could make, this one’s the best
except that the solution’s
not to make a resolution
’cause who needs the pressure of less stress to drive you to distress!

An end of the year Limerick for Rashmi’s Mind and Life Matters Challenge. I couldn’t resist being topically timely with this one. So I chose the theme of Resolutions for this week’s limerick. I don’t like to make resolutions. When I fail, as I am ultimately doomed to do, I end up feeling defeated and guilty. So I find it best to look for ways to be the best I can be everyday, instead of piling up expectations for the beginning of each new year! So far it has worked well. And I do manage to get things accomplished from year to year. 🙂

Some spend a lifetime
in the search of something new
it’s all vanity.
