Mutable – Friday’s Word of the Day Haiku

Today’s Word of the Day on Dictionary.com is “Mutable”. Now I know a thing or two about being mutable. Born under the astrological sign, Gemini, change is something I relish! This is slightly (though they might say enormously) unsettling for the fixed and cardinal friends and family I surround myself with. But I like to think they stick around because despite my mutable “flaw” at least I’m not boring!

There are certain qualities though that are not mutable; things like truth and character. I’m reminded of a quote by Maya Angelou, “When someone shows you who they are believe them; the first time.”

Dictionary.com defines mutable as an adjective:
1. liable or subject to change or alteration.
2. given to changing; constantly changing; fickleor inconstant.

It originated from the Latin verb mūtāre meaning “to change.” It entered English in the early 1400s.

Here then are my Haikus featuring the word, mutable:

most first impressions
don’t lie about character
it’s not mutable

life is mutable
we can depend on this truth
because change happens

Magnetic Poetry Monday – 10 October 2016

a little hope is all
it takes, a moment’s
promise on the wing,
a friendly smile,
a gentle touch to
make a heart
believe in love ❤️

Pumpkin Roll Bars

img_6232

I am loving the first cool dry day of fall here in sunny Southwest Virginia! Time for baking an annual favorite, Pumpkin Roll Bars!  I found the recipe on Pinterest a few years ago. You can see the original here.

I don’t veer too far from the original except on a few counts. These bars are best served cold so once they’ve cooled, cut them in squares and store in the frig.

Here’s what you’ll need:
Two mixing bowls
One 9 x 13 inch baking pan
Cooking Spray
Electric Mixer

Ingredients
6 tablespoons butter, softened
1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 (15 oz.) can pumpkin
1/4 cup water
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin spice
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Cream Cheese Filling
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 large egg

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In one bowl, cream the butter, sugars, pumpkin, water, eggs and vanilla on medium speed. Blend in the spices, baking sofa and baking powder. Finally, add the flour a cup at a time blending the cake mixture until smooth. The batter will be thick and paste-like in consistency.

In the second bowl blend the filling ingredients until smooth.

Spray the baking pan with non-stick spray and smooth two-thirds of the batter evenly. Add the filling and spread to the edges forming a second layer. Drop the remaining batter in dollops on top of the cream cheese layer. With a butter knife lightly swirl the dollops into the bottom two layers. (You don’t want to blend completely.)

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the center of the cake springs back when touched. Cool completely in pan, then cut into bars. If you have any left, store in the ‘frig. Enjoy!

Ode to a Fallen Leaf on Pavement

ripped from her anchor, seduced by a storm
I grieve for the leaf who’ll never reach home
she’ll perish denied earth’s succor and warmth
ravaged by tempests, then tossed used, alone

I grieve for the leaf who’ll never reach home
trusting, in free fall, death’s promise of rest
ravaged by tempests, then tossed used, alone
left there to wither, exposed and bereft

trusting, in free fall, death’s promise of rest
Gaia groans helpless in empty embrace
left there to wither, exposed and bereft
imprisoned, controlled by walls out of place

Gaia groans helpless in empty embrace
shackled, her freedom to thrive is denied
imprisoned, controlled by walls out of place
her beautiful wildness quelled and despised

shackled, her freedom to thrive is denied
nature’s perfection, season to season
her beautiful wildness quelled and despised
she must be hushed the haughty will reason

nature’s perfection season to season
she’ll perish denied earth’s succor and warmth
she must be hushed the haughty will reason
ripped from her anchor, seduced by a storm

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse ~ 9 October 2016

Weird week. Cyberspace is on fire with inconvenient truths for some and revelations of inconceivable atrocities perpetrated by a man who aspires to lead our nation. From one side of his boastful mouth he mocks us claiming that his words are “just words” and from the other side he claims to speaks for us.

He doesn’t speak for me. And I pray that those who sleep in acquiescence to his vile aspirations and actions will wake up soon…before it’s too late.

That is all I have today. It’s been a weird, sad week. 😔

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse ~ 9 October 2016

lines bit by bit
breeze through life
life’s first little death
birthing hope in ecstasy
each moment matters
true service is free
haunting the hopeful
but i have felt them
each creak, each groan tells the tale
truth matters…reason matters…words matter…anything less is just noise
saying, “come on baby, smile…”
