100 Words…Except for One
“I’ll see you then”, she whispered through tears on that morning when he, duffel bag flung over his shoulder, boarded the train.
But she never said, “goodbye”.
Goodbyes are for endings and they were just beginning; busy with plans for a long happy future.
When she received the letter, delivered by two uniform-clad gentleman, it occurred to her as she thanked them smiling, “I never said goodbye.”
The townsfolk say you can set your watch by her arrival to the train platform, same time each day, mumbling over and again as the train passes, “but I never said goodbye…”

I love the ending. She obviously never managed to find any closure. A wonderfully poignant story. 🙂

Such a sad tale, but a great story! I agree with Louise, she never got closure and lives in limbo because of it. Wonderful touching story and thank you for participating in Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers challenge!

Wonderful, but very sad story. Maybe she could not bring herself to say goodbye ..thinking that may mean he would not return, but in the end, it had nothing to do with it and she had no power over that.

I thought about your take on her story. We tend to do that… Silly rituals, words spoken or not spoken, all to have some control over life. And as you said, we have no power over that. Thanks for your comments. It added a little more depth to the story. 😊
