“Not knowing what to expect, he made his way into the dark of the forest”. Time and the environment had all but eaten away what was once their clubhouse. Only a few boards dangled from the crook in the old tree.  But that wasn’t what he came for.

It had been thirty years since Joe had been home. News of Tom’s death brought him back to pay his respects and fulfill a promise. He found the spot and dug a shallow hole near the tree’s trunk. The box was still there, its contents intact. They had all made a pact as boys that when the time came, those left behind would send it with the first of them to go.

At the funeral parlor, before the casket was closed, Joe smiled as he placed the book on Tom’s chest… “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.

a trilogy of septs

A new challenge and poetry style called a “sept”. Seven lines long with the following syllable structure: 1-2-3-4-3-2-1. I decided to give it a go. Thanks to
Jane Dougherty Writes for this new challenge!

Today’s theme: Hands

Hands
Extend
Hearts exposed
Displaying trust…
But betrayed
Become
Fists

Hands
Are quite
Versatile
Appendages
Fulfilling
Hopes and
Dreams

Hands
Caress
Skin to skin
Connecting us
Separate
Once, now
One.

Sunday’s Week in Review 18 October 2015

Late night, or rather, early morning post…
What an interesting week! As usual the compilation of a line from each post waxes a bit poetic in a quirky sort of way. It reads like a snapshot to me. In fact when I read it I thought, “This is so me!” At least for this week. And about that word quirky…I’m curious now..must look up its origin. Whoever thought of it…I think I like them! 🙂

how can you miss someone you’ve never met?
It suits me, don’t you think?
I don’t know how I got here.
All things are worthy
Maybe that is the point.
She’s a late bloomer
A rogue or scoundrel
Whoever thinks reptiles don’t snuggle has never had a tortoise whisper sweet nothings in their ear.

Unplugged..

Took a break from writing today…
Breakfast with my granddaughter
A bit of pumpkin carving and
A snuggle with the tortoise.

Oh yeah…about that last part…

Whoever thinks reptiles don’t snuggle has never had a tortoise whisper sweet nothings in their ear! ❤️

Happy Saturday my fellow WordPressers! 😊

“Shirk” Friday’s Word of the Day Haiku Challenge

Sometimes a word has two very distinct and separate meanings. Take “Shirk” for instance. Most of us are familiar with shirk the verb. The Online Etymology Dictionary provides us the origin of “shirk” the verb:

shirk- 1630s, “to practice fraud or trickery,” also a noun (1630s, now obsolete) “a needy, disreputable parasite” [OED], perhaps from German schurke “scoundrel, rogue, knave, villain” (see shark (n.)). Sense of “evade one’s work or duty” first recorded 1785, originally in slang.

But did you know that Shirk is also a noun with a completely different meaning? Here is Shirk the noun as defined in Wikipedia:

Which brings me to today’s challenge…to write a Haiku using today’s word…

To Shirk? Or be a Shirk? – A Haiku

A rogue or scoundrel
shirks one’s duty, but a Shirk?
Unforgivable!
