Ice Cream Tummy Aches

doll

“They’re yelling again. They always yell. We’ll just stay here. Is that okay Lucy?”

“I don’t know why Daddy gets so mad and then Mommy cries.  It makes my tummy hurt, like when I’ve eaten too much ice cream.”

“Sigh….”

“So Lucy, what would you like to wear today? I like this pink dress. Do you like it? Okay. There, that looks nice. Let me fix your hair. I have some pink bows. You look so pretty…”

At that moment mommy yelled like Sophie had never heard her yell before, “Get out! …Just…GO!” And then the front door slammed so hard it made the whole house shake. Sophie squeezed Lucy close, burying her head in the ruffled layers of her pink dress, when she heard mommy’s footsteps coming toward the closet.

Mommy opened the door. “Oh Sophie! I’m so sorry. Are you okay? It’s going to be okay…I promise.”

Sophie looked up. Mommy’s face was red. She had been crying. “I’m okay Mommy. Lucy doesn’t like yelling.”

“Oh, I know, I know…it’s not going to happen again. Come on. Get up my pretty girl. How about you and Lucy and I head into the kitchen for some ice cream…”

“That’s okay Mommy, my tummy hurts.”

“So…what’s this?

After 30 years in sales, Donna knew when to toss the hook and reel em in.

“Well…neat story. This property has been owned by only one family, the McDonalds. Joe McDonald, hoping to win the heart of his love, Lisbeth, created this beautiful roof top garden. She was a country girl and he knew it would take something special to get her to move to the city. He proposed to her right here, surrounded by wild flowers and roses. Of course, she said yes.”

“Oh Teddy, I love this…roses…and wildflowers!”

Teddy sighed, “You heard the lady…let’s do this.”

Purpura Terra

Discovery of Purpura Terra had set a flurry of planning into motion at the Independent Space Exploration Consortium (ISEC). With construction underway, ISEC launched a call for a special breed of volunteers. This was a one-way mission.

When Sarah heard about it, she jumped at the opportunity. She easily passed the rigorous screening process, much to the dismay of her family in Toledo. They couldn’t understand how she could throw her life away for what they considered a “suicide mission”.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

The space capsule had launched four years earlier. Sarah and her teammates had made the trip in a suspended cryogenic state to limit any adverse health affects of the long flight.

The team was revived as the ship entered Purpura Terra’s atmosphere. Sarah was surprised at how energized she felt. They ate a light meal, hydrated and donned insulated, oxygenated suits in preparation to disembark.

As the captain opened the hatch, a pale purple light illuminated the cabin.

Sarah stepped out into the light and thought, “Oh yeah, I was born for this!”

“What in blazes were you thinking Jeff?!”

“Well, Uncle Joe said they floated on the river in tire inner tubes.”

“Right! INNER tubes…with AIR inside!!! Not TIRES…you dummy! How’re we gonna get that thing out of the river and back into the garage before dad finds out? I shouldn’t help you!

“Pleeeease!!! I’ll do your chores for a week!”

“Let me think about this for a minute.”

“Maybe we can…”

“Shhhhh!”

“I was thinkin’…”

“Don’t think! You’ll only make it worse!”

“Pete! Someone’s coming!”

“Hey guys…whatcha up to?”

“Hey Dad…we were just…”

“Hi dad! Well Jeff, are you gonna tell him or should I?!”

How lovely she is
exposed for the world to see
but i imagine
she weeps for her faded leaves
wind-whipped, tumbling round her feet.

I wonder if she remembers the spring.
