Tumescent – Friday’s Word of the Day Haiku

Tumescent…What a spicy little word this is! Dictionary.com provides a rated G definition, focusing almost exclusively as it applies to the use of language, but a deeper probe (sorry, I’m having way too much fun with this one) reveals quite an expanded explication!  Here is the definition from Oxford’s Learner’s Dictionary:

When it comes to crafting today’s Haiku….what to do….what to do?!😜

Joy had planned the perfect time and place to tell Pete the news. It was the happiest place she could think of. They had met for the first time on those high swings.  Her seat buckle had gotten jammed and Pete helped free her after the ride had settled to the ground. That was 5 years ago. Since then, he had made her the happiest woman on earth.  The only thing that would make their lives better would be this.

So…there in front of their special place she told him.

He lifted his hand to his brow as if it might somehow block her words.

“I want a divorce. I’m moving the kids to the coast this weekend so we’re settled before school starts. Please stay away from the house until we’re gone.”

She picked the most public place to tell him. But he couldn’t blame her. He was running out of promises and apologies. “I’m sorry” was not enough to bridge the breach of trust from his last outburst, and he knew it.

He also finally admitted that he needed help. One day he would thank her for leaving.
