barely a woman, girl-child, mother
she gazes into her daughter’s eyes
soul deep pools of ebon wonder
rockabye, sweet dream, lullabies
toddling sprite, she lives to hold her
barely a woman, girl-child, mother
exploring together, all life’s treasures
fierce protector, prone to hover
years soon pass like fleeting seconds
tears of joy, consuming anguish
barely a woman, girl-child, mother
left to tend an empty nest
bittersweet, the blooming season
wings now flexed, she yearns to fly
some return, but others wander
barely a woman, girl-child, mother

A Quatern for Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie Sunday Writing Prompt based on the collage above and Sylvia Plath’s beautiful verse.

Wow – this is most wonderful and powerful Kat! You’ve led us on a journey from young to aged – the steps some take – and it is perfect in the poetic form – there is a great sentiment translated that is intimate, yet general enough to be more broad in its embrace – even if one has not been a mother …. and to suggest as you have, in so few words ….. and what I find fascinating, is the seeming shifting of voices/perspective – I felt like I was both child and mother and mother and child as I have read this …
well done and thanks for playing the Sunday Writing prompt this week 🙂

Thank you so much. I really do enjoy this challenge every week. It is a truth that as parents we are only given space in a chapter or two of our children’s lives. This week’s verse spoke that to me so clearly. The breathtaking awe, and the self-doubt that so often creeps in as we think about all that we could have done better. ❤️

Some of us ache to have had a loving mother.
