Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 31 December 2017

It is just hours away from the turning of the wheel where I live. A new year waits in the wings promising blessings; birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, things to see, places to go, conversations to be had, dreams to realize, music, laughter, love, beauty…and poetry…let’s not forget poetry, and hugs, the more the better. 😊

Yeah, I know, 2017 was a challenging year. It brought out the worst in some of us, but… it also revealed the very best in us too. We spoke truth to lies, stood up for what is right, listened to and gave voice to the abused, offered safe havens for the refugees and the outcast, we cared, we voted. There is a certain momentum launching us into 2018. Can you feel it? I can! We have a clean slate upon which to write the next chapter of the story of us.

With 2017’s hours numbered, you’ll see no resolutions from me. But I will be taking advantage of this opportunity to close the door on 2017.

Let’s do this! Be audacious. Be blessed. Dream big. Live, love, laugh. Be you. Happy 2018!

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 31 December 2017

let us linger here
eight minutes was an eternity
alms mean nothing
through perspicacity’s eyes
“I” is an Illusion
circles, wheels, whirligigs,
their hearts aflutter
silence in darkness swelling
it is hopelessness
accustomed to glitz
an innocent trust
magic in ordinary
stone deep sweetness
crushed by life
when only a hug will do

A shi sai or ReVerse poem is a summary poem with a single line lifted from each entry of a collection of work over a particular timeframe and re-penned in chronological order as a new poem. Unlike a collaborative poem, the shi sai features the words of one writer, providing a glimpse into their thoughts over time. I use it as a review of the previous week.

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 24 December 2017

The streets in my town are unseasonably dark this year. Have you noticed it where you live? While there are a few pockets of twinkling lights dotting the neighborhood, most homes are dark. If I didn’t have a calendar I wouldn’t even know it’s Christmas.

We are all weary I think. Weary of bad news. Weary of lies. Weary of unchecked corruption. Weary of the growing divide between the haves and have-nots. Weary of not being heard. Weary of the darkness. We are so so weary.

So, it’s not a surprise that this year’s holiday season seems a lot more subdued and dispirited than years past. Our hearts are just not into it, all the flash and pomp and gaiety, but I don’t think that this is necessarily a bad thing.

Only empty cups can be filled. Rock bottoms make the best foundations. We need darkness to see the light. Half full or half empty means you have a glass to wonder about. Okay, okay, I’m stop with the clichés. But can you see what I’m getting at?

If you are struggling this year to find the light be encouraged my friends. The days are getting longer! Light is staging a grand coup! We are witness to the magnificent resilience and regeneration of Nature at her finest and reminded to surrender briefly to the dark. It cannot exist without the music and shimmer of the dawn. And love, well love’s dawning is the greatest gift of all this season of hopelessness and want. Remember seasons past and hold the truth of their steady cycling from light to dark to light again in your heart. It knows the way to the light. It knows.

Peace, love and light to you and yours.

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 24 December 2017

it is only a moment
flickering light dancing
raining down on us
silence the voices
the seething of consciousness
the souls who linger here whisper
I know what you’re going to say,
blessed peace, love and light
as he wields his crayon
dawn to dusk
I long only for the poetry
a moment’s sweet wish

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 17 December 2017

Happy Sunday! We are in the midst of the final days of 2017. We celebrate a myriad of holidays at this time of year. Families gather. Sometimes it is the only time when everyone is together, which can be a wonderful thing or a challenge (that’s a nice way of saying it).

This is a time when we give in to extremes…we spend too much, eat too much, worry too much and ultimately regret our lapse of control when the new year arrives. It’s a lot of pressure. A stressful time when everything good about our life, and yes, everything bad too, is magnified by the colorful lights of season and longer cold, dark nights.

I have been feeling the stress. I should be holly, jolly and bright this time of year. But I’m not.

I have found myself dreading the impending ‘big day’, enduring the the onslaught of commercial reminders, season’s greetings, yard decoration wars and annual work parties where we’re all expected to act like a big happy family. I put on a good face, smile, return festive salutations and act like a Who from Whoville.

And then it dawned on me. If I’m putting on a happy face, soldiering through, is it possible others are too? What if we’re all just hoping our smiles don’t betray how fragile we’re feeling inside?

If you’re struggling, a word of encouragement…you’re not alone. Be kind to yourself. Give yourself permission to opt out of the festivities, or not. It’s okay whatever you decide to do.

We’ve made a mess of this holiday. The collective we, that is. Bigger, better, more…and then some. It’s never enough. Perfection? It’s a myth.

I wish you peace. Not world peace. I wish YOU peace.

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 17 December 2017

life springing forth
brussel sprouts
there was magic once
of doubt gone missing
In a shocking turn of events
…these are rare times
eventide vespers
the day surrenders, dusking
homeland security at work
mishpocha from everywhere
‘tis the season of
never longing for more
to hope for

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 10 December 2017

I must say that as interesting as this week’s reVerse is, I am most smitten with the last two lines. I wish I had written them in a single poem. Well I did, sort of, in this poem. Which is precisely why I love this weekly ritual. Choosing favorite lines from each post of the previous week always results in new inspiration or sets me on a course of heady reflection.

Back to my two favorite lines…

they will whisper
light is not quiet

Whoa…that is a mindful! Light is not quiet. Set a single lit candle in a dark room and you will see how loud she is! Light has also been likened to truth and neither is truth quiet. Though the purveyors of untruths believe they can silence truth, relegating it to whispers at water coolers, confessionals, and behind closed doors, it is only a matter of time. Once a whisper is allowed to escape it trickles from a stream to a gush to a deluge until the dam breaks.

We have witnessed the rage of this inevitable force of natural law these past few weeks. Like Pandora, truth seeks reparations for the assault of having been imprisoned inside the confines of its chamber.

She is fierce. She is brilliant. She is legion. And the terrible secret she has held for decades, for centuries, has found its voice. A whisper at first…and then a roar, “me too”.

We can only hope that we don’t try to contain her. To lock her away once the dust settles, like we do with so many other flickers of truth that come to light. She has a lesson to teach us. One hopes we are listening.

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 10 December 2017

softly she comes
mom called…her angel
silken shrouded death
life’s for the living
it’s all relative
so much for their brilliant plan
We miss you! Come back!
when people wake up
it was such a sad story, you see,
once touted as all the rage
…I love the futility of it all
tell me who you are
go for brilliance
when we look up we see the same sky
they will whisper
light is not quiet

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 3 December 2017

Well. Weird week. Electronics locked in trunks (a coworker), iPhones dipping into the loo (mine), some missed favorite challenges (I’ll get back on track in the coming week) and Mercury in retrograde, enhanced by the undertow of a super full moon tonight. Is it any wonder I am feeling a bit kerfluffled (my spell check doesn’t like that word, but I do. I made it up…so I’m going with it!)

It helps to have a sense of humor on weeks like this. It also helps to be a glass half full, look on the bright side, eternally optimistic attitude. All is not lost.

I actually had a bit of unencumbered peace while I was phoneless. It helped me recall a simpler time, before mobile phones, before texts, voicemail, and answering machines when we relied on landline phones and if you weren’t home to take a call…folks just had to try you later.

It made me reminiscent for a fresh college-ruled notebook and my peacock-blue, cartridge-loaded fountain pen; the thrill I always feel when that first bulging droplet bleeds onto a page…for words scribbled on used envelopes and paper napkins, so I wouldn’t forget a moment’s brilliance.

Writing is not tied to a means or method but it is a way of living and looking at the world, with a keen discerning eye primed to capture the next revelation or reflection. It is breath and life to those of us who are weavers of words. How fortunate we are to have a forum to share our thoughts and imaginings.

Have a wonderful week. Don’t stop writing!

Shi Sai Sunday’s Week in ReVerse – 3 December 2017

may we rise from heavy slumber
bundled in bunting
what I long for these days
and tell you (I) would, except,
when the world ends
women have found their voice to tell,
determined, but not heartless.
what peaceful thoughts I might have had are doomed.
there is no sleeping
on some wild paths
in happy ever always
in the dark,
what we have lost
tossed by a cool breeze…
extravagate in that thought
